Kogla, the Titan Ape
The Commander
When Kogla enters, it fights up to one target creature you don't control.
Whenever Kogla attacks, destroy target artifact or enchantment defending player controls.
: Return target Human you control to its owner's hand. Kogla gains indestructible until end of turn.
Guide
Gameplan
Kogla is a mono-green stompy beatdown commander that combines aggressive removal with a big body. You ramp into Kogla early, use his ETB fight to clear blockers and his attack trigger to strip artifacts/enchantments, then beat down with a steady stream of large creatures. The Human bounce ability lets you reuse ETB effects and dodge removal.
Strengths
- Built-in creature removal via the fight trigger plus repeatable artifact/enchantment destruction on attack
- Indestructible activation protects Kogla from board wipes and combat tricks
- Mono-green gives access to the format's best ramp, fixing, and explosive starts
- Strong synergy with Human ETB creatures for value engines and infinite-ish loops
Weaknesses
- Mono-green struggles with flyers and lacks counterspells or instant-speed interaction
- Reliant on Kogla being on the battlefield; high commander tax punishes repeated removal
- Fight can backfire against indestructible or larger creatures, dealing damage to Kogla
- Limited card draw compared to other colors, can run out of gas
Key Cards
- Yorvo, Lord of Garenbrig — A cheap Human that grows huge and triggers off your other green creatures, great to bounce and replay with Kogla.
- Fierce Empath — A Human that tutors a big creature to hand on ETB, recurrable via Kogla's bounce ability.
- Temur Sabertooth — Provides indestructibility-style protection and free bounce of your creatures, redundant with Kogla's own ability.
- Heroic Intervention — Cheap blanket protection against wipes and targeted removal, crucial for a creature-heavy mono-green deck.
- Beast Whisperer — Turns your creature-dense board into a card-draw engine to fight green's card disadvantage.
- Greater Good — Converts your big creatures into massive card draw and combos well with sacrifice value.
Upgrade Path
Add fast mana and ramp (Sol Ring, Nature's Lotus, Carpet of Flowers, Three Visits) to deploy Kogla and threats ahead of schedule. Lean into a finisher package—Craterhoof Behemoth, Pathbreaker Ibex, and Triumph of the Hordes—plus protection like Heroic Intervention and Snakeskin Veil to keep your engine online. To push higher, include Human ETB value loops and tutors like Worldly Tutor and Green Sun's Zenith to assemble your best threats consistently.
