Lae'zel, Vlaakith's Champion
The Commander
If you would put one or more counters on a creature or planeswalker you control or on yourself, put that many plus one of each of those kinds of counters on that permanent or player instead.
Choose a Background (You can have a Background as a second commander.)
Guide
Gameplan
Lae'zel turns every counter you place into a counter-plus-one, snowballing +1/+1 counters, charge counters, and loyalty into overwhelming board states. You ramp counters out fast, pump a wide or tall board, and close with anthem-fueled aggression or +1/+1 counter payoffs. Pair her with a Background to fill in card advantage or recursion that mono-white otherwise lacks.
Strengths
- Mono-white counters package is cheap, fast, and resilient to single-target removal
- Background slot lets you customize toward aggro, tokens, or value
- Doubles loyalty on planeswalkers and proliferate effects for explosive growth
- Only three mana, so she enables an aggressive curve and reliable early starts
Weaknesses
- Mono-white struggles with card draw and ramp without specific includes
- Heavily commander-dependent—loses tempo if Lae'zel is repeatedly removed
- Counter synergies can be blanked by board wipes that ignore toughness buffs
- Limited interaction beyond white's removal suite; weak to fast combo
Key Cards
- Cathars' Crusade — Every creature you cast triggers counters that Lae'zel inflates, ballooning your whole board.
- Hardened Scales — Stacks multiplicatively with Lae'zel so each +1/+1 counter event adds even more.
- Conclave Mentor — Another counter-adding replacement that compounds with Lae'zel and gains you life.
- The Ozolith — Banks counters from dying creatures and redistributes them, all boosted by Lae'zel.
- Felidar Sovereign — Lifegain payoff that becomes a realistic alternate win behind counter-fueled lifelink.
- Inspiring Call — Cheap white card draw that scales with your counter-heavy board and protects it.
Upgrade Path
Add more counter replacement effects (Hardened Scales, Branching Evolution-style isn't in white, so lean on Conclave Mentor) and proliferate enablers like Evolution Sage analogs and Karn's Bastion to exploit doubling. Improve mono-white's weaknesses with strong card advantage (Welcoming Vampire, Esper Sentinel, Smothering Tithe) and fast mana (Sol Ring, mana rocks). Pick a Background like Raised by Giants or Cultist of the Absolute for extra threat density, and add protection such as Heroic Intervention's white cousin Flawless Maneuver to safeguard your counter investments.
