Liliana, Heretical Healer // Liliana, Defiant Necromancer
The Commander
Whenever another nontoken creature you control dies, exile Liliana, Heretical Healer, then return her to the battlefield transformed under her owner's control. If you do, create a 2/2 black Zombie creature token.
+2: Each player discards a card.
−X: Return target nonlegendary creature card with mana value X from your graveyard to the battlefield.
−8: You get an emblem with "Whenever a creature dies, return it to the battlefield under your control at the beginning of the next end step."
Guide
Gameplan
Drop Liliana early as a 2/3 lifelink body, then flip her into a planeswalker the first time another nontoken creature dies. As a walker she grinds card advantage with +2 discard and reanimates threats with -X, eventually locking the board with her -8 emblem. You play a mono-black attrition/aristocrats midrange game, trading creatures to flip her and refuel from the graveyard.
Strengths
- Flips for free on any sacrifice or creature trade, giving a planeswalker and a Zombie token
- -X reanimation provides repeatable value and recursion of your best creatures
- +2 symmetric discard hits combo/control hands while you have graveyard recursion
- Mono-black access to tutors, ramp, and powerful reanimation support
- Lifelink front side stabilizes early game
Weaknesses
- Fragile front side dies to spot removal before she flips
- Planeswalker side is vulnerable to attackers and burn once flipped
- Single-color limits interaction (no counters, hard to deal with artifacts/enchantments)
- Needs creatures dying to transform—stalled boards leave her stuck as a vanilla-ish body
- -8 ultimate is slow and you may never reach it
Key Cards
- Viscera Seer — Free sac outlet to flip Liliana on demand at instant speed.
- Carrion Feeder — Reliable no-mana sacrifice outlet that grows and triggers her transform.
- Gravecrawler — Recurs itself off Zombie synergy to repeatedly feed sac outlets and her flip condition.
- Reanimate — Cheap reanimation that complements her -X and fills the same gameplan.
- Phyrexian Reclamation — Buys back fodder creatures to keep triggering deaths and refueling.
- Sheoldred, the Apocalypse — Punishes opponents while her -X can return Sheoldred from the yard repeatedly.
Upgrade Path
Add fast mana (Dark Ritual, Sol Ring) and tutors (Demonic Tutor, Vampiric Tutor) to assemble engines faster, plus more free sac outlets to control when she flips. Lean into a reanimation package—Buried Alive, Entomb, Animate Dead—to cheat huge bombs into play early. Top-end can include game-ending reanimation targets and a Razaketh/Sheoldred suite to convert grindy advantage into a hard lock.

Archetypes
- Aristocrats — Sac outlets flip her and her death triggers fuel value while she reanimates the fodder.
- Reanimator — -X returns nonlegendary bombs from the graveyard, and the emblem ultimate is a recursion engine.
- Zombie Tribal — The Zombie token and her own clerical/undead theme support a black Zombie swarm with Gravecrawler-style recursion.
- Midrange Attrition — +2 discard and lifelink grind out opponents in long, grindy games.
