The Commander

Flying

{3}{W}{W}, Sacrifice Major Teroh: Exile all black creatures.

Guide

Gameplan

Major Teroh is a mono-white flying beater that doubles as a one-sided wrath against black decks, but in most pods you're playing a midrange white control deck built around taxes, blink, and recurring removal. You curve out efficient creatures and value pieces, grind incremental advantage, and protect a board that wins through combat or a go-wide finisher. Teroh's activated ability is mostly a niche sideboard-style answer rather than your engine.

Strengths

  • Flying body that can pressure life totals and carry equipment
  • Built-in answer that blows out mono-black/Aristocrat reanimator pods
  • Mono-white access to the format's best taxes, board wipes, and recursion
  • Cheap to cast and recast despite removal-heavy metas

Weaknesses

  • Activated ability only hits black creatures, so it's dead in most pods
  • Mono-white struggles with card advantage and ramp without support
  • No inherent card draw or value engine attached to the commander
  • Sacrificing Teroh costs you your commander to fire the ability

Key Cards

  • Smothering Tithe — Premier mono-white ramp and mana engine to fuel a clunky white shell.
  • Swords to Plowshares — Best-in-class cheap removal to clear blockers and protect your board.
  • Land Tax — Fixes draws and fills your hand to offset white's card-advantage problem.
  • Mangara, the Diplomat — Repeatable card draw that punishes attacks and creature spam, a rare white engine.
  • Cathars' Crusade — Turns any token or blink strategy into an explosive board-wide threat.

Upgrade Path

Lean into mono-white's best engines—Smothering Tithe, Land Tax, Mangara, and Esper Sentinel—to fix white's card and mana weaknesses. Add a compact combo or overwhelming finisher (Approach of the Second Sun, or a tokens+Cathars' Crusade kill) so games close decisively, and round out interaction with Stax pieces like Drannith Magistrate and Authority of the Consuls. Treat Teroh's exile ability as a free metagame bonus rather than a build-around.

Core Cards

Win Conditions

  • ▸Commander damage and chip damage from an equipped, evasive Teroh
  • ▸Going wide with tokens buffed by anthems like Cathars' Crusade or Craterhoof-style overrun
  • ▸Grinding the table out with removal and value engines until your board dominates

Archetypes

  • Midrange Control — Teroh's flying body plus white's wraths and removal let you grind value and police the board.
  • Tokens / Go-Wide — Mono-white excels at flooding the board and finishing with anthems and overrun effects.
  • Blink / Value — White ETB creatures and flicker effects generate incremental advantage behind a defensive shell.
  • Voltron — A 2-power flier with evasion can be suited up with equipment and protection to deal commander damage.
