The Commander

{X}, {T}: Choose a card name. Target opponent reveals X cards at random from their hand. Then that player discards all cards with that name revealed this way. Activate only during your turn.

Guide

Gameplan

Nebuchadnezzar is a slow blue-black control commander whose own ability is unreliable, so the deck wins by leaning on color staples: counter and remove threats, grind opponents out of cards via discard/wheels, and close with a value engine or combo. Early turns set up ramp and interaction, the midgame strips hands and stabilizes the board, and the late game converts card advantage into a lethal finisher.

Strengths

  • Access to the best removal, counterspells, and card draw in the format (Dimir colors)
  • Naturally pairs with a discard/hand-disruption subtheme that few decks defend against
  • Can pivot into many proven UB strategies regardless of the commander's weak ability
  • Flexible mana sink late game when you have nothing better to do with mana

Weaknesses

  • The commander's ability is genuinely poor: random reveal makes targeted discard inconsistent and mana-hungry
  • No evasion, no protection, and a 5-mana body that does little to advance a board
  • Struggles against decks that empty their hand quickly (aggro, tokens, storm)
  • Two-color identity lacks ramp/wraths of green or white
  • Easily falls behind if you treat the discard ability as a real plan

Key Cards

  • Megrim — Turns every discard you force (yours or wheels) into direct damage, giving the discard theme an actual win path.
  • Liliana's Caress — Stacks with Megrim to punish opponents for the discard you generate across the table.
  • Windfall — Mass discard that triggers your punisher enchantments and refills your own hand.
  • Bottomless Pit — Repeatable random discard that mirrors and supports Nebuchadnezzar's effect without tapping him.
  • Notion Thief — Punishes wheels and opponent draw while you cycle hands, generating massive card advantage.
  • Rhystic Study — Premier UB card-advantage engine to fuel a grindy control game.

Upgrade Path

Stop relying on the commander's ability and treat him as a Dimir control shell: add fast mana (Mana Crypt, Dark Ritual), premium interaction (Mana Drain, Cyclonic Rift, Toxic Deluge), and a tight win package such as Torment of Hailfire or a Mindcrank/Bruvac mill engine. If you want to honor the discard theme, build it as a coherent punisher subtheme with Megrim effects and wheels rather than the slow tapped ability, and lean on tutors to assemble your finisher reliably.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Megrim/Liliana's Caress damage triggered by repeated discard and wheels
  • ▸A combo finish like Mindcrank + Bruvac/grinding mill loops
  • ▸Generic UB engines outvaluing the table then deploying a big finisher like Torment of Hailfire
  • ▸Mill the table out with Bruvac the Grandiloquent plus mass mill spells

Archetypes

  • Discard / Hand Disruption — His ability and color identity lean into stripping opponents' hands, supported by wheels and Megrim-style punishers.
  • Control — Dimir gives the counters, spot removal, and card draw to play a reactive game and win late.
  • Mill — UB can attack libraries directly as an alternative to the slow discard plan.
  • Combo — Black-blue offers compact two-card kills to bypass the commander's lack of pressure.
