Norin the Wary
The Commander
When a player casts a spell or a creature attacks, exile Norin. Return it to the battlefield under its owner's control at the beginning of the next end step.
Guide
Gameplan
Norin flickers constantly—every spell cast or attack exiles and returns him—so you build a mono-red engine of ETB and flicker payoffs that grind out incremental damage and value while Norin dodges removal and combat. Each end step he returns, triggering anything that cares about creatures entering, and you snowball that into a board-wide burn finish or token army.
Strengths
- Nearly impossible to kill—he self-exiles in response to almost everything
- Triggers flicker/ETB payoffs over and over with no mana investment
- Cheap one-drop commander leaving lots of mana for engine pieces
- Excellent at punishing the whole table for casting spells and attacking
Weaknesses
- Norin himself does nothing without enablers—a slow, do-nothing general otherwise
- Mono-red means weak removal, card draw, and recursion
- Fragile if your payoff permanents are removed; the engine stalls fast
- Slow to close games at high-power tables and vulnerable to fast combo
Key Cards
- Impact Tremors — Pings every opponent each time Norin returns, turning constant flickers into inevitable damage.
- Purphoros, God of the Forge — Deals 2 to each opponent on every Norin re-entry, a primary win engine.
- Genesis Chamber — Spits out a Myr token each time Norin enters, fueling tokens and aristocrats payoffs.
- Confusion in the Ranks — Norin's repeated enters force chaotic permanent swaps that wreck opponents' boards.
- Outpost Siege — In Khans mode it grants relentless card advantage as Norin keeps re-entering and you keep casting.
- Warstorm Surge — Each Norin return deals 1 damage to any target, stacking with other ETB pingers.
Upgrade Path
Add more no-cost ETB damage and token payoffs (Terror of the Peaks, Impact Tremors, Purphoros) so each flicker matters, and pack red's best fast mana like Jeska's Will, Mana Crypt, and rituals to deploy your engine early. Improve interaction and protection with red staples (Pyroblast, Deflecting Swat, Chaos Warp) and consider haste/extra-combat or sneaky tutors like Gamble to assemble Purphoros plus token engines faster.

Win Conditions
- ▸Death by a thousand pings via Impact Tremors and Purphoros each time Norin returns
- ▸Going wide with Genesis Chamber Myr tokens plus an anthem or sac outlet
- ▸Warstorm Surge / Stuffy Doll loops dealing repeated direct damage
- ▸Chaos lock with Confusion in the Ranks stripping opponents' boards while you grind out value
Archetypes
- Blink/Flicker — Norin's self-exile loop is the engine for repeatable enters-the-battlefield value with zero mana cost.
- Aristocrats/Tokens — Genesis Chamber and token makers turn each return into bodies you can sacrifice or swarm with.
- Chaos/Group Slug — Confusion in the Ranks, Stuffy Doll and pinger effects punish the entire table for normal actions.
- Spellslinger Burn — ETB damage payoffs like Impact Tremors and Purphoros convert constant flickers into direct damage.
