Queza, Augur of Agonies
The Commander
Whenever you draw a card, target opponent loses 1 life and you gain 1 life.
Guide
Gameplan
Queza turns every card you draw into a Wheel of Misery: drip opponents down while padding your life total. You play a draw-heavy Esper control/value shell, chaining card draw triggers until repeatable or mass-draw effects close the game, and lean on lifegain to outlast the table while you find your engine.
Strengths
- Each draw is incremental life loss + lifegain, so card advantage doubles as a clock and a cushion
- Esper colors offer the best removal, counterspells, and card draw in the format
- Wins out of nowhere with mass-draw effects that don't require combat or a board
- Lifegain makes you very hard to race or burn out
Weaknesses
- Queza's drain only hits one targeted opponent per draw, so it's slow in multiplayer without payoffs
- Heavily commander-dependent; the deck stalls if Queza is repeatedly removed and tax climbs
- Vulnerable to graveyard/loop hate and stax pieces that tax or punish drawing
- Can durdle and draw threat from the table while assembling its engine
Key Cards
- Underworld Dreams — Stacks with Queza so every draw drains 2, turning extra-draw spells into lethal.
- Sphinx's Tutelage — A repeatable engine that draws or mills, and pairs as an alternate mill win condition.
- The Locust God — Each draw makes an Insect, fueling more draw triggers and an aggressive token clock.
- Teferi's Ageless Insight — Doubles your draws, doubling every Queza drain and lifegain trigger.
- Sheoldred, the Apex Predator — Adds a second per-draw punisher and protects your life total.
- Peer into the Abyss — A single big draw with Queza online can deal lethal to a target opponent.
- Smothering Tithe — Generates the mana to chain draw spells and refill in one turn.
Upgrade Path
Add fast mana and rituals (Smothering Tithe, Mana Crypt, Dark Ritual) to power out a one-turn mass-draw kill, and run multiple stacking punishers (Underworld Dreams, Sheoldred, Psychosis Crawler) so a single big draw is lethal across the table. Tighten interaction with cheap counters and removal (Swan Song, Swords to Plowshares, Cyclonic Rift) to protect Queza, and add draw doublers like Alhammarret's Archive and Teferi's Ageless Insight to accelerate the clock.
Core Cards

Win Conditions
- ▸Mass-draw spell (Peer into the Abyss, Pull from Tomorrow) with Queza plus extra punishers for a single-target kill
- ▸Wheel effects (Windfall, Forced Fragmentation) feeding multiple draw-punishers like Underworld Dreams and Sheoldred
- ▸Token swarm from The Locust God / The Reservoir-style overdraw
- ▸Decking opponents via Sphinx's Tutelage and mill doublers
Archetypes
- Control — Esper interaction lets you protect the engine while grinding the table with card draw.
- Combo — Mass-draw plus per-card-draw payoffs creates near-deterministic drain kills.
- Mill — Sphinx's Tutelage and Bruvac-style effects fold mill into the draw plan for alternate wins.
- Group Slug / Punisher — Wheels and forced symmetric draw punish the whole table while Queza and friends drain.
