Slobad, Goblin Tinkerer
The Commander
Sacrifice an artifact: Target artifact gains indestructible until end of turn.
Guide
Gameplan
Build a mono-red artifact engine where Slobad lets you freely sacrifice cheap artifacts (Treasures, tokens, Krark-Clan Ironworks fodder) to protect your key pieces from removal and board wipes. You snowball artifact count, generate value off death/sacrifice triggers, and eventually deploy a big artifact payoff or combo to close. Turn to turn you ramp with mana rocks and Treasures, build a critical mass of artifacts, and use Slobad's free sac outlet to fuel engines while keeping indestructibility on your bombs.
Strengths
- Free, repeatable sacrifice outlet that doubles as protection for your best artifacts
- Enables artifact-recursion and 'dies'-trigger engines without paying mana
- Cheap 2-mana commander that comes down early and supports a focused mono-red artifact theme
- Strong against targeted removal and wraths by making key permanents indestructible
Weaknesses
- Mono-red lacks reliable card draw and tutoring compared to other colors
- Indestructible does nothing against exile, bounce, sacrifice, or -X/-X effects
- Heavily artifact-dependent, so Vandalblast/Bane of Progress can blow you out
- Slobad himself adds little offense or evasion and is fragile to creature removal
- Needs to sacrifice an artifact each activation, which can drain your board if not replenished
Key Cards
- Krark-Clan Ironworks — Turns every sacrificed artifact into mana, pairing with Slobad to fuel explosive turns and combos.
- Goblin Welder — Swaps artifacts between battlefield and graveyard for repeated value and combo enablement, perfect alongside Slobad's sacrifice.
- Myr Retriever — Recurs artifacts from the graveyard, creating a recursion loop with Slobad's free sac outlet.
- Reckless Fireweaver — Pings every opponent each time an artifact enters, turning your artifact churn into a win condition.
- Mycosynth Lattice — Makes everything an artifact, supercharging Slobad and enabling stax or combo finishes.
- Ashnod's Altar — Another free sacrifice outlet that converts your fodder into mana for big plays.
Upgrade Path
Add fast mana (Mana Crypt, Mana Vault, Sol Ring) and more artifact recursion (Goblin Engineer, Trash for Treasure) to assemble combos faster. Lean into a dedicated wincon package like Krark-Clan Ironworks + Myr Retriever + Reckless Fireweaver for a deterministic kill, and include protection like Defense Grid or Pyroblast. Round out with strong card-advantage artifacts (The One Ring, Endless Atlas, Wheel of Misfortune) to offset mono-red's card-draw weakness.
Core Cards
The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.
Win Conditions
- ▸Reckless Fireweaver or Disciple of the Vault pinging opponents out via repeated artifact entries/sacrifices
- ▸Infinite mana/loop combos (KCI + recursion + payoff) to drain or deck the table
- ▸Beatdown with a protected, indestructible artifact threat like Wurmcoil Engine or a big Construct
Archetypes
- Artifacts (Aggro/Value) — Slobad rewards a high artifact count with protection and a free sacrifice outlet for value engines.
- Combo — Free sacrifice plus recursion (Welder, Myr Retriever, KCI) and pingers like Fireweaver enables infinite loops.
- Aristocrats — Slobad's free sac outlet feeds artifact death triggers and recursion for incremental damage and value.
