Surtr, Fiery Jötun
The Commander
Trample (This creature can deal excess combat damage to the player it's attacking.)
Whenever you cast a historic spell, Surtr deals 3 damage to any target. (Artifacts, legendaries, and Sagas are historic.)
Guide
Gameplan
Surtr turns your historic spells (artifacts, legendaries, and Sagas) into Lightning Bolts to the face or to creatures, attacking everyone's life total while also clearing blockers. You flood the board with cheap legendaries and artifacts, chaining casts to rack up burn, while Surtr's trample finishes off opponents in combat. Win by grinding 40+ life through repeated 3-damage triggers or by going wide with cheap historic permanents.
Strengths
- Each historic cast deals 3 to any target—incredible reach and removal stapled to your normal game plan
- Mono-red gives consistent access to ramp, rituals, and burn payoffs
- Doubles as a removal engine, picking off mana dorks, blockers, and small commanders for free
- Trample plus a 5-mana body makes Surtr a real combat threat on his own
Weaknesses
- Relies on cheap historic spells; clunky hands of expensive cards leave triggers idle
- Vulnerable to creature removal—if Surtr dies the engine stops entirely
- Mono-red lacks card advantage and struggles against efficient lifegain
- Three-player tables mean burning everyone down takes many triggers; can be slow without enablers
Key Cards
- Surtr, Fiery Jötun — The engine—every historic spell becomes 3 damage to any target.
- Mishra's Bauble — A free historic artifact that cantrips and pings for 3 at zero mana cost.
- Birgi, God of Storytelling — Refunds mana on every spell cast, letting you chain historic spells for multiple triggers in a turn.
- Sensei's Divining Top — A recastable historic artifact that loops with cost reducers for repeated 3-damage triggers.
- Urza's Saga — Historic land Saga that ramps, makes constructs, and tutors artifacts to fuel triggers.
- Hammer of Nazahn — Legendary equipment that protects and pumps Surtr while being a historic cast itself.
Upgrade Path
Lower your curve and add free or near-free historic spells—Mishra's Bauble, Mox Opal, Lotus Petal, Ornithopter—so each turn produces multiple triggers. Add cost reducers and ritual mana (Birgi, Jhoira's Familiar, cheap Sagas) to enable explosive multi-cast turns, and protect Surtr with cheap equipment and red protection like Heroic Intervention's analogs or counterspell-baiting redundancy. Finally, include impulse draw (Light Up the Stage, Outpost Siege) to refuel the historic chain.
