The Commander

Landfall — Whenever a land you control enters, Tam becomes prepared. (While it's prepared, you may cast a copy of its spell. Doing so unprepares it.)

You draw a card and gain 1 life.

Guide

Gameplan

Tam is a Simic value engine: flood the board with extra land drops to repeatedly trigger landfall, casting copies of Deep Sight to draw cards and gain life every time a land enters. You ramp aggressively, bury opponents in card advantage, and convert that fuel into big landfall payoffs or a controlling endgame. The deck plays the long game, turning every land into a cantrip.

Strengths

  • Generates relentless card advantage with no extra deck slots—just play lands
  • Incidental lifegain stabilizes you against aggro while you build up
  • Thrives in the lands/ramp shell GU already wants to play
  • Engine is repeatable each turn cycle and snowballs with extra land-drop enablers

Weaknesses

  • Tam alone does not close games—you need separate payoffs
  • Slow and grindy; vulnerable to fast combo before the engine comes online
  • Heavily reliant on commander staying in play, and GU has poor protection/interaction
  • Without extra land drops the draw trigger only fires once per turn

Key Cards

  • Exploration — Doubles your land drops to fire Tam's landfall and Deep Sight twice or more per turn.
  • Azusa, Lost but Seeking — Two extra land plays a turn dramatically multiplies your draw-and-gain triggers.
  • Oracle of Mul Daya — Lets you play lands off the top, smoothing draws and chaining landfall triggers.
  • Scute Swarm — Turns every landfall into exponential token generation for a fast clock.
  • Avenger of Zendikar — A premier landfall payoff that converts your land-heavy game into a board-wide army.
  • Dryad of the Ilysian Grove — Adds an extra land drop and fixes mana while ramping you toward your payoffs.
  • Crucible of Worlds — Replays fetchlands and sac lands to repeat landfall every turn.
  • Tatyova, Benthic Druid — Stacks redundant draw-and-gain landfall triggers alongside Tam for absurd card flow.

Upgrade Path

Add fast mana (Sol Ring, mana dorks) and more extra-land-drop effects (Burgeoning, Mina and Denn, Wayward Swordtooth) so the engine fires multiple times each turn. Layer in tutors and fetchlands plus Crucible of Worlds/Ramunap Excavator for repeatable landfall, and harden your payoffs with protection like Heroic Intervention and counterspell backup to close before the table stabilizes.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Overwhelm with landfall token generators like Avenger of Zendikar or Scute Swarm
  • ▸Out-card-advantage the table and win with a few resilient finishers
  • ▸Combo with extra-land effects plus payoffs (e.g., Scute Swarm exponential tokens) for a lethal swing
  • ▸Mill or finisher off massive card draw into a haymaker like Craterhoof Behemoth

Archetypes

  • Landfall — Every land that enters triggers Tam plus your payoffs, making land-drop density the core strategy.
  • Lands Ramp — Tam rewards the ramp shell GU loves by turning each ramp piece into card advantage.
  • Value/Control — Sustained card and life advantage lets you grind opponents out and win the attrition war.
  • Tokens — Landfall token makers like Scute Swarm and Rampaging Baloths build a board off your land drops.
