Tergrid, God of Fright // Tergrid's Lantern
The Commander
Menace
Whenever an opponent sacrifices a nontoken permanent or discards a permanent card, you may put that card from a graveyard onto the battlefield under your control.
: Target player loses 3 life unless they sacrifice a nonland permanent of their choice or discard a card.
: Untap Tergrid's Lantern.
Guide
Gameplan
Force opponents to sacrifice and discard permanents, then steal everything they give up via Tergrid's static ability. You spend the early game ramping into mass discard and edict effects, then snowball an overwhelming board of your opponents' best creatures, lands, and artifacts. The game ends once you've stolen enough resources that nobody can fight back.
Strengths
- Turns symmetrical sacrifice and discard effects into one-sided card advantage and board dominance
- Steals permanents at no extra cost, including bombs you'd never otherwise access
- Mono-black gives consistent tutors, ramp, and recursion
- The Lantern back side provides a built-in repeatable discard/sacrifice engine even from the command zone
Weaknesses
- Tergrid's ability does nothing against token sacrifice or instant/sorcery discard
- Heavily hated out and frequently targeted with removal the moment she lands
- Mono-black struggles with enchantment and noncreature permanent removal
- Can be slow to set up and offers little if forced sacrifice/discard pieces are answered
Key Cards
- Smallpox — Symmetrical sacrifice and discard that you break wide open with Tergrid stealing the discarded and sacrificed permanents.
- Bottomless Pit — Repeatable forced discard each upkeep that feeds Tergrid permanents turn after turn.
- Pox — Devastating mass sacrifice of lands, creatures, and cards that hands you a huge pile of stolen permanents.
- Mind Twist — Mass targeted discard that, with Tergrid out, dumps an opponent's hand straight onto your battlefield.
- Dictate of Erebos — Punishes opponents for losing creatures while chaining sacrifice triggers into Tergrid steals.
- Reflections of Littjara — Doubles your edict and discard spells, doubling the permanents Tergrid yanks away.
Upgrade Path
Add fast mana like Dark Ritual, Sol Ring, and a sacrifice-light tutor package (Demonic Tutor, Vampiric Tutor) to land Tergrid early and protect her. Lean into repeatable forced-discard and edict engines plus doublers like Reflections of Littjara, and include protection such as Lightning Greaves or Imp's Mischief. To push toward cEDH, prioritize efficient stax pieces and fast wins over grindy value, and consider Liliana of the Veil and Cabal Coffers for explosive mana and continuous symmetrical discard.

Archetypes
- Stax — Edicts, forced sacrifice, and discard lock opponents out of resources while you profit.
- Aristocrats — Sacrifice payoffs like Dictate of Erebos pair with Tergrid to drain and steal simultaneously.
- Reanimator — Mono-black recursion and the Lantern's discard let you fill and exploit graveyards for value.
