Guide
Gameplan
Cast The Legend of Roku as a 4-mana Saga that impulse-draws three cards, ramps a mana of any color, then flips into Avatar Roku, a value engine attacker. Roku's firebending 4 floods you with red mana each combat to deploy huge X-spells, refill from impulse draw, or stamp out 4/4 firebending Dragons, snowballing into an aggressive board that closes the game with burst mana.
Strengths
- Built-in card advantage and ramp before it even becomes a creature, smoothing your curve
- Firebending 4 gives explosive bursts of mana every combat to power X-spells, big eldrazi, or repeatable Dragon tokens
- Self-sufficient commander that rebuilds value if it dies and is recast as a Saga
- Cheap at 4 mana and entirely mono-red, keeping the deck consistent and color-screw-proof
Weaknesses
- The Saga front side is slow and produces no board presence for several turns
- Combat-dependent mana from firebending evaporates if Roku is blocked, chumped, or removed before damage
- Mono-red lacks reliable enchantment/artifact-resilient card draw and struggles against heavy control
- Firebending mana is colorless-aggressive but disappears at end of combat, so it can't be banked for instant-speed answers
Key Cards
- Birgi, God of Storytelling — Turns the firebending mana flood and cheap spell chains into repeated burst, fueling explosive turns.
- Comet, Stellar Pup — A mono-red planeswalker that generates more impulse value and tokens to attack alongside Roku.
- Fireshrieker — Doubling Roku's combat triggers and attacks effectively doubles firebending mana output.
- Hellkite Charger — Pairs with firebending mana to take extra combats, multiplying your mana and damage.
- Underworld Breach — Converts the surplus firebending mana into a recursion engine for explosive spell-based finishes.
- Ramos, Dragon Engine — A natural payoff and beater that loves the Dragon-token theme and big bursts of mana.
Upgrade Path
Lean into mana sinks that abuse firebending: extra-combat enablers (Aggravated Assault, Combat Celebrant), big X-spells (Fireball, Banefire), and rituals/Birgi to chain spells. Add fast mana (Mana Crypt, Jeska's Will, Ruby Medallion) and impulse-draw amplifiers like Valakut Exploration to keep gas flowing, then top out with a tight burn or extra-turn finish. Protect Roku with Lightning Greaves and recur it cheaply since recasting the Saga is its own reset button.

- Spellslinger — Impulse draw plus burst mana lets you chain burn and storm-style spells in a single turn.
- Aggro / Voltron — Roku is a self-equipping attacker whose firebending mana enables extra-combat and pump effects.
- Dragons — The
ability and red Dragon payoffs build a tribal flying army off excess mana.
