Tormod, the Desecrator
The Commander
Whenever one or more cards leave your graveyard, create a tapped 2/2 black Zombie creature token.
Partner (You can have two commanders if both have partner.)
Guide
Gameplan
Tormod, the Desecrator turns graveyard recursion into a token army: any spell or effect that exiles cards from your graveyard mints a tapped 2/2 Zombie. You fill the yard with self-mill and discard, then loop cheap graveyard-exiling effects to flood the board and either swarm or sacrifice for value. With a partner you splash a second color or a payoff/protection engine.
Strengths
- Generates wide token boards with no mana investment beyond the triggering effect
- Mono-black gives access to powerful tutors, recursion, and reanimation
- Pairs naturally with Aristocrats and reanimator shells already running graveyard payoffs
- Partner lets you customize the second commander to your build (protection, sacrifice, ramp)
- One-or-more clause means batch exiles only cost you one card but still net Zombies efficiently
Weaknesses
- Heavily reliant on a stocked graveyard, so graveyard hate shuts the engine off
- Tokens enter tapped, slowing aggressive plans and leaving them vulnerable
- Mono-black struggles with enchantment and noncreature permanent removal
- Board wipes can erase a turn's worth of work instantly
- Needs repeatable graveyard-exile outlets to be more than a fair value engine
Key Cards
- Altar of Dementia — Mills you to fuel the yard and provides a sacrifice-into-mill loop that exiles nothing but enables combos with reanimation.
- Gravecrawler — Recurs from the graveyard repeatedly, and combined with a sac outlet and Tormod generates infinite Zombies and triggers.
- Bloodghast — A free recursive body that loops with land drops or sacrifice to repeatedly trigger graveyard interactions.
- Phyrexian Altar — Free sac outlet that turns recursive creatures into infinite mana and infinite Tormod tokens.
- Gisa and Geralf — Self-mill plus Zombie recursion that synergizes directly with Tormod's tribe and graveyard engine.
- Buried Alive — Stocks the graveyard with combo pieces and reanimation targets to jump-start the engine.
- Skullclamp — Turns the endless stream of 2/2 Zombies into a relentless card-draw engine.
Upgrade Path
Add repeatable free sacrifice outlets (Phyrexian Altar, Ashnod's Altar, Viscera Seer) and recursive bodies (Gravecrawler, Reassembling Skeleton) to assemble infinite combos that exile and recur cards for unlimited Zombies. Lean on fast mana (Dark Ritual, Jet Medallion) and tutors (Demonic, Vampiric, Diabolic Intent) to find your engine pieces faster. Choose a partner like Tevesh Szat or Thrasios for a second color of interaction and protection, and run graveyard-hate resilience like Eternal Witness loops or Underworld Breach.

Win Conditions
- ▸Going wide with Zombie tokens and finishing through Coat of Arms, Zombie lords, or Craterhoof-style overruns
- ▸Infinite token or sacrifice loops draining the table via Blood Artist / Zulaport Cutthroat effects
- ▸Milling out opponents with repeatable sacrifice-into-Altar of Dementia loops
- ▸Beatdown backed by recursive threats and an ever-replenishing army
Archetypes
- Aristocrats — Sacrifice outlets plus recursive creatures and Tormod's token generation create a self-sustaining sac engine.
- Zombie Tribal — Tormod makes Zombies and rewards graveyard interaction, slotting into a self-milling Zombie horde shell.
- Reanimator — Exiling cards from your yard to reanimate or flashback fuels both your board and your Zombie production.
- Combo — Recursive creatures plus free sacrifice/altar outlets produce infinite tokens, mana, or mill kills.
