Volo, Guide to Monsters
The Commander
Whenever you cast a creature spell that doesn't share a creature type with a creature you control or a creature card in your graveyard, copy that spell. (A copy of a creature spell becomes a token.)
Guide
Gameplan
Build a creature deck where every creature has a unique creature type so Volo copies each one as you cast it, doubling your board and any enters-the-battlefield value for free. Curve out with high-impact creatures, protect Volo, and snowball card advantage and ETB triggers until you bury opponents in two-for-ones. You win by going wider and bigger than the table while generating absurd value off doubled creatures.
Strengths
- Free token copies of every singleton creature type double your board and ETB value
- Strong synergy with enters-the-battlefield creatures (each copy triggers again)
- Pure card and tempo advantage that scales with deck construction
- Plays well as both a value midrange deck and a combo enabler
Weaknesses
- Highly deckbuilding-restrictive: you must minimize overlapping creature types
- Volo dying turns off the engine, and he's an obvious removal magnet
- Tokens are sacrificed/exiled to legend rule or trigger fizzles if types overlap
- Slower starts before Volo lands and color-light interaction in GU
Key Cards
- Volo, Guide to Monsters — The entire engine; without him on the battlefield no copies are made.
- Avenger of Zendikar — A doubled trigger creates a massive token army and a near-immediate board wipe of opponents in damage.
- Craterhoof Behemoth — Copying it gives two overrun effects, often lethal across the table in one swing.
- Lightning Greaves — Haste and shroud protect Volo from removal and let him connect or block immediately.
- Cackling Counterpart — Flashback copy effects and clone spells pair with Volo to multiply your best creatures even further.
- Heroic Intervention — Cheap protection saves your doubled board from wraths and targeted removal.
Upgrade Path
Prune your creature base ruthlessly so almost no two creatures share a type, maximizing copy triggers, and lean into high-impact ETB and finisher creatures. Add fast mana (Sol Ring, mana dorks), protection (Lightning Greaves, Heroic Intervention, Tamiyo's Safekeeping), and clone/recursion effects to multiply your best threats. Tighten interaction with counterspells and flexible removal so you survive to deploy Volo and protect the engine.
Core Cards
The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.
Win Conditions
- ▸Craterhoof Behemoth or Overwhelming Stampede alpha strike off a doubled board
- ▸Avenger of Zendikar plus landfall flooding the board with plants then overrunning
- ▸Grinding incremental card advantage and ETB value until opponents are buried
- ▸Creature-based combos (e.g. doubled value engines) generating lethal or infinite resources
Archetypes
- Value Midrange — Volo turns every unique-typed creature into a two-for-one of stats and ETB triggers.
- Blink/ETB Synergy — Doubled enters-the-battlefield creatures generate exponential value with flicker effects.
- Tokens/Go-Wide — Each copy adds a body, snowballing into a wide board for overrun finishers.
- Combo — Copying creatures with infinite-mana or sacrifice loops can assemble game-ending engines.
