Yedora, Grave Gardener
The Commander
Whenever another nontoken creature you control dies, you may return it to the battlefield face down under its owner's control. It's a Forest land. (It has no other types or abilities.)
Guide
Gameplan
Yedora turns your dying creatures into Forest lands, so you sacrifice and recur creatures for value while ramping out of the graveyard into your mana base. You play sacrifice outlets, blink effects, and ways to flip those face-down Forests back into creatures, snowballing into a massive board and explosive mana. You close games by going wide, going tall, or assembling a sacrifice/recursion engine that out-grinds the table.
Strengths
- Converts creature death into ramp, giving mono-green relentless card and mana advantage
- Excellent grindy value engine that recovers from board wipes by leaving lands behind
- Synergizes with manifest/face-down themes and creatures with strong ETBs
- Sacrifice loops generate enormous, repeatable value with cheap creatures
Weaknesses
- Mono-green lacks interaction, card draw consistency, and removal flexibility
- Engine collapses if Yedora is removed and not promptly recast
- Face-down Forests are vulnerable to land destruction and Wasteland effects
- Slow to win without dedicated finishers; can build a big board with no payoff
Key Cards
- Cloudstone Curio — Bounce-loops creatures with ETBs while Yedora keeps converting deaths into lands for infinite value.
- Ashaya, Soul of the Wild — Makes your nontoken creatures Forests too, doubling down on land synergies and untap combos.
- Scapeshift — Sacrifices those face-down Forests to fetch payoff lands or fuel landfall.
- Sakura-Tribe Elder — A cheap creature that sacrifices for ramp and immediately returns as a Forest, netting two lands.
- Woodland Bellower — Tutors creatures and chains value, finding sac outlets and engine pieces in mono-green.
- Viscera Seer — A free sacrifice outlet that turns the whole board into a death-and-ramp engine.
Upgrade Path
Add fast mana (Sol Ring, mana dorks) and tutors like Worldly Tutor and Green Sun's Zenith to find engine pieces faster. Tighten the combo package with Cloudstone Curio, free sacrifice outlets, and an instant finisher like Walking Ballista, then add green's best interaction (Heroic Intervention, Beast Within) and recursion to protect Yedora and rebuild after disruption.
