What it does
Food is an artifact subtype, not a keyword ability. A Food token (or any artifact with the Food type) comes with a built-in ability: "
,
, Sacrifice this artifact: You gain 3 life." Many cards create Food tokens, and others care about Food you control or sacrifice.
The common misunderstanding: Food isn't an action you do—it's just a label on an artifact. You don't have to sacrifice it for life if other cards give you better uses, like drawing cards, dealing damage, or sacrificing for value. Also note the activation cost includes
and tapping, so it isn't free, and tapped/summoning-sick rules don't block sacrifice since tapping artifacts isn't restricted that way.
In Commander, Food shines in lifegain, sacrifice/aristocrat, and artifact-matters decks. Commanders like Gyome or Korvold turn Food into an engine, converting tokens into life, draw, or recurring sacrifice triggers.
