Samwise Gamgee
The Commander
Guide
Gameplan
Flood the board with cheap nontoken creatures to crank out Food tokens, then convert those Foods into life, value, or recursion of your best artifacts and legends. You grind out incremental advantage and recur key historic pieces all game, eventually winning through wide boards, lifegain payoffs, or a Food-based combo.
Strengths
- Reliable, repeatable Food generation just from playing creatures you'd cast anyway
- Built-in graveyard recursion for artifacts, legendaries, and Sagas keeps engines online
- Cheap two-mana commander that comes down early and synergizes with go-wide and lifegain shells
- Strong in token-doubling and ETB-blink strategies that multiply triggers
Weaknesses
- Food generation only triggers off nontoken creatures, so token swarms don't fuel it
- Without payoffs, Food is just incidental lifegain and the deck stalls
- Recursion costs three Foods, which is slow without doublers
- Vulnerable to board wipes since the engine depends on a wide creature base
- Color identity lacks card draw and interaction depth of other GW value piles
Key Cards
- Trostani, Selesnya's Voice — Converts your wide creature board and Food triggers into a massive lifegain engine.
- Cryptolith Rite — Turns every nontoken creature into mana, letting you abuse Samwise's per-creature triggers explosively.
- Academy Manufactor — Each Food trigger also makes Clues and Treasures, tripling your artifact value and ramp.
- Trelasarra, Moon Dancer — Rewards the constant incidental lifegain from Food with scry and growth.
- Witch's Oven — Pairs with Cauldron Familiar to weaponize Foods into a recursive drain combo.
- Cauldron Familiar — Samwise can recur it for value while it drains opponents off your Food sacrifices.
- Panharmonicon — Doubles Samwise's ETB Food triggers and any other creature ETBs in the deck.
Upgrade Path
Add token and trigger doublers (Doubling Season, Parallel Lives, Panharmonicon) and Food-as-Treasure converters like Academy Manufactor to break the engine open. Tighten the curve with strong ETB creatures and blink effects to maximize Food output, then add a compact combo finish such as Cauldron Familiar/Witch's Oven or an Aetherflux Reservoir lifegain kill. Finally, improve mana and interaction with efficient GW staples to survive board wipes that threaten the creature base.

- ▸Cauldron Familiar + Witch's Oven recursive Food drain
- ▸Lifegain payoffs like Aetherflux Reservoir or Felidar Sovereign
- ▸Grinding incremental value until opponents are outresourced, then attacking
Archetypes
- Lifegain / Food — Samwise turns your creature deployment into an endless stream of Foods and life to fuel payoffs.
- Aristocrats — Sacrificing Foods and recurring creatures feeds drain and sacrifice value loops.
- Blink / ETB Value — Flicker effects retrigger nontoken-creature ETBs, generating extra Foods each turn.
- Tokens / Go-Wide — A swarm of cheap creatures both makes Foods and provides a board to win with.
