Kutzil, Malamet Exemplar
The Commander
Your opponents can't cast spells during your turn.
Whenever one or more creatures you control each with power greater than its base power deals combat damage to a player, draw a card.
Guide
Gameplan
Kutzil turns +1/+1 counters and power-pumping effects into a card-advantage engine while shutting off opponents' interaction on your turn. You build a wide or tall counters board, swing with creatures that are bigger than their printed power, and refill your hand every combat. Protected by your free-flowing turns, you snowball board presence into a lethal attack.
Strengths
- Strong, repeatable card draw that only needs one buffed creature connecting
- The static ability blanks instant-speed removal, flash blockers, and counterspells on your turn
- GW counters synergies are deep and efficient at low budgets
- Cheap three-mana commander that gets going early and recovers from board wipes via card flow
Weaknesses
- Card draw requires combat damage, so chump blockers and Fog effects stall the engine
- Relies on creatures, so heavy board wipes set you back hard
- No evasion built in—gummed-up ground boards can shut off triggers
- Vulnerable on opponents' turns since the static only protects your own turn
Key Cards
- Hardened Scales — Amplifies every counter you place, making creatures far bigger than base power to reliably trigger Kutzil's draw.
- Branching Evolution — Doubles counters to inflate power above base and guarantee draws across your team.
- The Ozolith — Banks counters through removal and wraths so your buffed-creature engine survives board wipes.
- Inspiring Call — Draws a card per counter creature and protects them, comboing with the static ability for blowout-proof attacks.
- Bristly Bill, Spine Sower — Cheap counter engine that buffs the whole team to push power above base and a payoff sink for mana.
- Armored Scrapgorger — Easy early counter target and ramp that consistently attacks as a bigger-than-base creature.
Upgrade Path
Tighten the counter package with doublers (Doubling Season, Branching Evolution) and proliferate effects, and add evasion (trample/flying anthems like Shifting Ceratops or Snake Umbra effects) so triggers connect. Include resilience pieces such as The Ozolith and Heroic Intervention, then top out with a finisher like Craterhoof Behemoth or Triumph of the Hordes to convert your refilled hand and wide board into a single lethal swing.
Core Cards
The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.
Win Conditions
- ▸Wide counters board with anthems swinging for lethal commander/creature damage
- ▸Overrun-style finishers like Craterhoof Behemoth or Overwhelming Stampede off a buffed board
- ▸Grinding opponents out via card advantage then closing with evasive trample beaters
Archetypes
- +1/+1 Counters — Counters are the cleanest way to make creatures exceed base power, directly fueling Kutzil's draw trigger.
- Go-Wide Tokens — Anthem and pump effects raise many creatures above base power so multiple attackers each trigger draws.
- Stax-lite / Tempo — The static ability acts as a one-sided Grand Abolisher, enabling protected alpha strikes and combo turns.
- Voltron — Single buffed beater connecting fills your hand while the static shields your equipment-laden threat on offense.
