Farmer Cotton
The Commander
When this creature enters, create X 1/1 white Halfling creature tokens and X Food tokens. (They're artifacts with ",
, Sacrifice this token: You gain 3 life.")
Guide
Gameplan
Cast Farmer Cotton repeatedly from the command zone—each cast makes more Halflings and Food tokens than the last (X = number of times cast). Flood the board with 1/1 Halflings, leverage Food for lifegain and sacrifice synergies, then go wide with anthems or convert your army into a lethal alpha strike.
Strengths
- Scales with commander recasts, turning commander tax into a board-flooding engine
- Produces two token types at once: bodies for go-wide and Food for lifegain/sac fodder
- Cheap two-drop commander that's easy to recast and abuse with blink/flicker
- Naturally resilient board presence in token-friendly GW colors
Weaknesses
- First cast often makes few or zero tokens, so early impact is weak
- Tokens are fragile 1/1s extremely vulnerable to board wipes and sweepers
- Relies on getting Farmer Cotton to die/return repeatedly to scale, which opponents can disrupt
- No built-in evasion or protection—needs support pieces to actually win
Key Cards
- Cathars' Crusade — Each token entering pumps your whole board, snowballing the mass of Halflings into real threats.
- Intangible Virtue — Anthem effect that buffs every Halfling and token, enabling a wide lethal swing.
- Skullclamp — Turns your endless supply of 1/1 Halflings into a relentless card-draw engine.
- Trostani, Selesnya's Voice — Populates your best tokens and gains massive life as your army hits the field.
- Ashnod's Altar — Sacrifices Halflings and Food for mana to recast Farmer Cotton and fuel combos.
- Phyrexian Altar — Converts your token swarm into mana for repeated Farmer Cotton recasts.
- Trudge Garden — Food synergy that grows fungus tokens whenever you sacrifice Food, adding another payoff.
Upgrade Path
Add token doublers (Doubling Season, Anointed Procession, Parallel Lives) and free sacrifice outlets (Ashnod's/Phyrexian Altar) to convert recasts into explosive payoffs. Lean into Skullclamp and Welcoming Vampire for card advantage, and finish with a payoff like Craterhoof Behemoth, Triumph of the Hordes, or an aristocrats drain package; smoother mana via Sol Ring and efficient GW ramp keeps the recast loop online.
