Why is this card good?
Battlefield Forge is a premium dual land for any Boros (RW) deck, and it's a no-brainer inclusion in two-color and many three-plus-color decks running red and white.
The key sell: it enters untapped and taps for either of your colors immediately, with no conditions. The 1 damage to yourself is trivial in a 40-life format where your bigger threats are board wipes and combo, not chip damage. You'll often grab colorless instead to dodge the ping entirely when you don't need a specific color.
- Wants it: Boros aggro, equipment/voltron (Wyleth, Isshin), tokens, and any aggressive shell where untapped lands matter for tempo.
- Pair it alongside Clifftop Retreat, Sacred Foundry, and other fast duals to build a consistent mana base.
When to skip: dedicated lifeloss-punishing or lifegain-matters lines are rare downsides, but realistically the only reason not to run it is budget — and it's cheap. In mono-color or non-RW decks it does nothing useful.

Like most lands, each land in this cycle is colorless. The damage dealt to you is dealt by a colorless source.

The damage dealt to you is part of the second mana ability. It doesn't use the stack and can't be responded to.
