The Commander

Flying (This creature can't be blocked except by creatures with flying or reach.)

Whenever Appa attacks, another target attacking creature without flying gains flying until end of turn.

Guide

Gameplan

Appa is a mono-white aggro/go-wide commander that turns your ground army into evasive attackers. Build a board of efficient white creatures and tokens, then alpha strike through the air as Appa grants flying each combat. You're racing to close games before slower decks set up, using anthems and extra-combat effects to maximize damage.

Strengths

  • Reliable evasion that pushes through stalled boards and chump-blockers
  • Mono-white keeps the mana base cheap and consistent
  • Synergizes naturally with go-wide tokens and anthem effects
  • Cheap 4-mana commander that pressures life totals early

Weaknesses

  • Single-target flying grant per attack limits how much you can punch through at once
  • Mono-white lacks card advantage and ramp compared to other colors
  • Vulnerable to board wipes that erase your developed army
  • Removal on Appa or a single fog/blocker can blunt key turns

Key Cards

  • Anointed Procession — Doubles your token production to flood the board for wider, more lethal swings.
  • Skullclamp — Solves white's card-draw problem by sacrificing small tokens for fuel.
  • Aetherflux Reservoir — White's lifegain-heavy shells can leverage it as an alternate combo finisher.
  • Heroic Intervention — Protects your assembled board from the wraths that mono-white aggro fears most.
  • Sun Titan — Recurs your cheap fallen permanents and equipment to grind back after removal.

Upgrade Path

Add fast mana like Sol Ring, Smothering Tithe, and efficient white ramp to deploy threats ahead of the curve. Lean into anthems (Intangible Virtue, Cathars' Crusade) and extra-combat enablers (Aurelia, Combat Celebrant) to make each Appa swing lethal, and pack protection like Teferi's Protection and Flawless Maneuver against board wipes. Tighten the curve with cheap evasive creatures and card-advantage engines like Welcoming Vampire to offset white's draw weakness.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Alpha strike with a wide evasive board buffed by anthems
  • ▸Voltron Appa or another flier with equipment and protection
  • ▸Extra-combat steps multiplying your aerial damage
  • ▸Lifegain into Aetherflux Reservoir as an alternate finisher

Archetypes

  • Tokens — Appa makes a wide token board lethal by handing out evasion every combat.
  • Aggro/Go-Wide — Cheap white creatures plus anthems and the flying grant create fast aggressive damage.
  • Voltron — Appa's innate flying lets you suit up a single threat and fly over for big hits.
  • Aristocrats — Token bodies double as sacrifice fodder for value engines alongside the aggressive plan.
