Whenever you cast a white spell, put a +1/+1 counter on each legendary creature you control. They gain vigilance until end of turn.
Whenever you cast a black spell, put a +1/+1 counter on each legendary creature you control. They gain menace until end of turn.
Ardbert turns every white or black spell you cast into a counter-doubling pump for your whole legendary board, so you flood the field with legends and beat down with evasive, ever-growing threats. Early turns deploy cheap legendaries and ramp, mid-game you chain spells to stack counters and grant vigilance/menace, then swing for lethal across multiple bodies.
Each spell pumps your entire legendary board, snowballing fast in a legend-dense build
Vigilance plus menace makes attackers both safe and hard to block
Cheap three-mana commander that's relevant the turn it lands
Rewards a spell-dense curve, so even pure interaction advances your clock
BW gives access to premium removal, recursion, and tutors
Heavily reliant on fielding many legendary creatures to maximize value
Board wipes can erase a counter-heavy investment in one turn
No built-in evasion beyond menace and no innate protection for Ardbert
Vulnerable to creature-light or stax disruption that slows your spell chain
Lacks card advantage engines on its own; can run out of gas
A black-and-white-castable removal piece that triggers Ardbert while answering threats.
Add counter doublers like Doubling Season, Branching Evolution, and Mondrak to multiply each trigger, and lean into a legend-dense roster so every spell pumps the most bodies. Improve consistency with tutors (Vampiric Tutor, Demonic Tutor) and protect your investment with anthem/recursion and board-wipe insurance like Teferi's Protection or Heroic Intervention. Tighten the curve toward cheap white and black spells so you can chain multiple triggers per turn.
