Firebending 1 (Whenever this creature attacks, add . This mana lasts until end of combat.)
Whenever Azula attacks, you may discard a card. Then you get an experience counter for each player who discarded a card this turn.
: Until end of turn, Azula gets +1/+1 for each experience counter you have and gains menace.
Azula is a mono-black voltron commander that snowballs experience counters by attacking and discarding cards, then converts that pile into a lethal, menacing threat with her pump. You curve her out turn 3, start swinging and discarding immediately, and lean on group-discard effects (wheels and symmetric discard) so every opponent contributes counters each turn. By midgame a single activation makes her a huge evasive attacker who closes games via commander damage.
Builds a permanent, exponential threat through experience counters that survive board wipes and removal
Discard-as-cost turns on madness, reanimation, and graveyard payoffs as free value
Menace plus a large pump makes her hard to block and a fast commander-damage clock
Cheap 3-mana body that comes down early and can rebuild quickly after being killed
Firebending mana helps power out activations and other costs the turn she attacks
Mono-black has weak access to ramp and no real way to protect a creature from removal beyond regeneration/protection
Heavily commander-dependent—if Azula is answered repeatedly, the deck stalls
Counters grow slowly unless you force opponents to discard, requiring extra deck support
No built-in evasion until you spend , leaving her chump-blockable in the early game
Vulnerable to fog, damage prevention, and go-wide blockers despite menace
