The Commander

{2}{B}, Sacrifice a creature: Target creature gets -2/-2 until end of turn.

{2}{B}, Exile a creature card from your graveyard: Target creature gets -2/-2 until end of turn.

Guide

Gameplan

Cabal Patriarch is a mono-black attrition commander that grinds the board down with repeatable -2/-2 effects, fueled by sacrificing your own expendable creatures or exiling fodder from your graveyard. You play a slow control game, picking off creatures one at a time while accumulating card and board advantage, then close with reanimated threats, aristocrat drains, or a big mono-black finisher.

Strengths

  • Repeatable, unconditional creature removal that scales with your mana and never runs out of fuel
  • Mono-black gives access to the best tutors, ramp (Cabal Coffers/Ritual effects), and recursion in the format
  • Sacrificing creatures synergizes seamlessly with aristocrat and death-trigger payoffs
  • Graveyard fuel mode lets it function even when board-empty, doubling as graveyard hate

Weaknesses

  • -2/-2 does nothing against large creatures, planeswalkers, or non-creature threats
  • Activations are mana-hungry and slow, struggling against fast combo decks
  • No card advantage or evasion built into the commander itself
  • Single color limits access to counterspells, board wipes beyond black's, and interaction diversity

Key Cards

  • Bloodghast — Recurs from the graveyard repeatedly to serve as endless sacrifice fodder for the first ability.
  • Reassembling Skeleton — A self-returning creature gives you a near-infinite supply of bodies to feed -2/-2 activations.
  • Cabal Coffers — Powers the mana-intensive activations and lets you fire off multiple -2/-2s in a turn.
  • Blood Artist — Turns every sacrificed creature into incremental life drain that closes games.
  • Phyrexian Tower — Adds a free sacrifice outlet plus ritual mana to chain removal activations.

Upgrade Path

Add fast mana and big-mana payoffs (Cabal Coffers, Nykthos, Crypt Ghast) so you can fire multiple -2/-2 activations per turn and overload on devotion. Lean into recursive fodder (Bloodghast, Reassembling Skeleton, Gravecrawler) plus aristocrat drains for a self-contained engine, and add black's premium tutors (Demonic, Vampiric) to assemble Bolas's Citadel or a reanimation finisher consistently. Top-end interaction like Toxic Deluge and Damnation covers the threats -2/-2 can't handle.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Aristocrats drain via Blood Artist/Zulaport Cutthroat as you sacrifice fodder
  • ▸Gray Merchant of Asphodel devotion drains repeated through recursion
  • ▸Reanimating a large evasive threat and beating down
  • ▸Grinding opponents out of creatures then finishing with a single mono-black finisher

Archetypes

  • Aristocrats — Its sacrifice mode pairs perfectly with death-trigger drain payoffs and recursive fodder creatures.
  • Control — Repeatable creature removal lets you stabilize the board and grind opponents into the dirt.
  • Reanimator — The graveyard-exile mode plays nicely with a graveyard-centric package that also reanimates bombs.
  • Mono-Black Devotion — High black pip density supports devotion payoffs like Gray Merchant alongside the removal engine.
