Calamity, Galloping Inferno
The Commander
Haste
Whenever Calamity attacks while saddled, choose a nonlegendary creature that saddled it this turn and create a tapped and attacking token that's a copy of it. Sacrifice that token at the beginning of the next end step. Repeat this process once.
Saddle 1
Guide
Gameplan
Saddle Calamity for just 1 with a nonlegendary creature, swing in with haste, and copy that saddler twice as tapped attacking tokens to double up combat damage and ETB triggers before sacrificing them at end of turn. Build around fat token-makers, big attackers, and creatures with juicy enter-the-battlefield or attack triggers so the two free copies snowball board presence or burn each turn.
Strengths
- Saddle 1 is trivially cheap, so you almost always get both copies on Calamity's attack
- Two free tapped-and-attacking copies effectively triple a single creature's combat damage and ETB value every turn
- Mono-red gives consistent ramp, rituals, and access to powerful nonlegendary beaters and token engines
- Token copies enter attacking, dodging summoning sickness and removal timing
- Snowballs fast — one good attack can end the game out of nowhere
Weaknesses
- Mono-red lacks card draw and recovery, so a board wipe or removal on Calamity stalls hard
- Reliant on connecting in combat; getting chump-blocked or fogged neutralizes the engine
- Tokens are sacrificed at end step, so the value is fleeting unless you blink/keep them
- Wants a creature already on board to saddle, making empty boards awkward
- No protection or evasion built in — Calamity dies to most spot removal
Key Cards
- Combat Celebrant — Saddle it, copy it twice, and each copy's exert grants extra combat phases for absurd repeated attacks.
- Terror of the Peaks — Copying it twice means its damage trigger fires off every token entering, turning your attack into a burn finisher.
- Port Razer — Each combat-damage trigger from the copies adds an extra combat phase, chaining attacks and more Calamity triggers.
- Hellrider — With copies attacking, every attacker pings opponents for direct damage, scaling with your wide boards.
- Inferno Titan — Two copies of its attack trigger rain down a pile of damage to clear blockers or burn down players.
- Solphim, Mayhem Dominus — Doubles all the noncombat damage your copied burn creatures deal, supercharging Terror of the Peaks lines.
Upgrade Path
Add more attack-trigger and ETB payloads (Terror of the Peaks, Inferno Titan, Goldspan Dragon) plus extra-combat enablers (Combat Celebrant, Port Razer, Aggravated Assault) to weaponize the copies harder. Improve mana with fast rocks like Sol Ring, Mana Vault, and rituals to deploy Calamity by turn three or four, and include haste/evasion enablers and protection (Lightning Greaves, Whispersilk Cloak) so Calamity reliably connects. Tuck in damage doublers like Fiery Emancipation and Solphim to convert single attacks into one-shot kills.
