The Commander

Whenever you cast your third spell each turn, put a +1/+1 counter on Captain Ripley Vance, then it deals damage equal to its power to any target.

Guide

Gameplan

Cast a high volume of cheap spells each turn so you hit your third cast, growing Captain Ripley Vance and slinging escalating damage at faces or creatures. You play as a mono-red spellslinger/aggro-burn deck that chains cantrips, rituals, and copy effects to fire multiple triggers per turn and snowball Vance into a one-card win machine.

Strengths

  • Built-in repeatable removal and reach that scales without needing to attack
  • Mono-red consistency: cheap cost reducers, rituals, and impulse draw keep spells flowing
  • Doubles as a creature and a Voltron/burn threat, splitting opponents' answers
  • Spell-copy effects let you reach three casts fast and add extra growth

Weaknesses

  • Three-spells-per-turn requirement collapses to card flooding without strong card advantage
  • Single-target removal on Vance resets all your progress
  • Mono-red lacks counterspells, board wipes, and graveyard hate
  • Vulnerable to creature hate and damage prevention/fog effects on the big swing

Key Cards

  • Birgi, God of Storytelling — Generates mana on each spell cast, fueling long chains to reliably hit your third spell.
  • Storm-Kiln Artificer — Makes Treasures off every cast, paying for cheap spells to keep the chain going and grow Vance.
  • Grapeshot — A storm payoff that also counts toward your third spell, providing a burst kill alongside Vance triggers.
  • Underworld Breach — Recasts cheap spells from the graveyard to explode your spell count and finish the table.
  • Ruby, Daring Tracker — Cheap ramp and a body that helps maintain mana for chaining multiple spells.
  • Reckless Impulse — Cheap impulse draw that refills your hand to sustain the three-spell engine.

Upgrade Path

Add fast mana and cost reducers (Jeska's Will, Goblin Electromancer-style effects, Birgi) to consistently exceed three casts per turn, plus spell copiers like Dualcaster Mage and Twinning Staff. Tighten the curve toward 1-2 mana cantrips and rituals, and include protection such as Deflecting Swat or Heroic Intervention proxies in red like Fight as One. For top-end, build toward the Underworld Breach + Lion's Eye Diamond + Grapeshot storm kill for a deterministic finish.

Archetypes

  • Spellslinger — The whole deck revolves around casting cheap instants and sorceries to trigger Vance's third-spell ability.
  • Storm — High spell density plus rituals and cost reducers enable storm payoffs and rapid Vance growth.
  • Burn/Voltron — Vance becomes a growing source of direct damage, killing players through repeated triggers and combat.
