The Commander

Jump — During your turn, Kain has flying.

Whenever Kain deals combat damage to a player, that player gains control of Kain. If they do, you draw that many cards, create that many tapped Treasure tokens, then lose that much life.

Guide

Gameplan

Cast cheap, evasive (Jump = flying on your turn) Kain, pump its power, and connect for big swings that draw you cards equal to the damage and net you a pile of Treasure — paying for it with life and temporary loss of the creature. You then claw Kain back (it returns to the command zone when it dies, or via theft/return effects) and repeat, snowballing card advantage and mana to outvalue the table before closing with the resources you've banked.

Strengths

  • Engine-level card draw and Treasure generation that scales with Kain's power, refueling the whole deck
  • Only 3 mana with built-in evasion, so it gets value fast and rebuilds cheaply after dying
  • Treasures fix mono-black's color/ramp needs and enable big X-spells and combo payoffs
  • Commander recursion: dying Kain heads to the command zone, so the gift is rarely permanent

Weaknesses

  • You willingly hand a (possibly large) creature to an opponent — disastrous if you can't reclaim it
  • Life payment equal to damage punishes greedy pumps and rewards opponents who race you
  • Mono-black means no clean answers to enchantments or some artifacts
  • If opponents simply keep Kain and don't attack you with it, you've ramped your foe

Key Cards

  • Homeward PathInstantly returns Kain (and any other donated creatures) to your control on demand, closing the loop cleanly.
  • Disrupting ScepterBlack struggles for recursion, but cheap edicts and sac payoffs let you kill the donated Kain to recast it from the command zone.
  • Bontu's MonumentDiscounts and triggers off your repeated Kain recasts while draining the table.
  • Whip of ErebosLifelink offsets the life loss and the Treasures fuel reanimating big bodies to pump Kain's draws.
  • ReconnaissanceLets Kain swing then pull back, but more importantly black power-pumpers turn each connection into a massive card/Treasure payday.
  • Bolas's CitadelWith the life you have left and the Treasures you bank, it converts your card-advantage engine into explosive turns.

Upgrade Path

Add reliable reclaim and sac outlets (Homeward Path, cheap edicts, Phyrexian Tower) so you never lose Kain for good, plus lifegain (Whip of Erebos, Gray Merchant) to absorb the life payment. Lean into Treasure payoffs and big mana sinks — Torment of Hailfire, Bolas's Citadel, Exsanguinate — to convert the engine into wins, and round out with fast mana (Dark Ritual, Sol Ring, Mana Crypt) to deploy and recast Kain repeatedly.

Win Conditions

  • Convert overwhelming card and Treasure advantage into an unbeatable board or a single explosive turn (Bolas's Citadel, Torment of Hailfire, big X-spells)
  • Drain the table with aristocrats/Bontu's Monument-style death and recast triggers
  • Reanimate or ramp into haymaker finishers funded by Treasures
  • Grind opponents out of answers, then close with reclaimed Kain plus equipment/auras as a beater

Archetypes

  • Value Engine / Card AdvantageKain's hit refills your hand and floods Treasures every combat, letting you out-grind any table.
  • Big Mana / Treasure RampStacked Treasures bankroll giant X-spells and expensive bombs the deck couldn't otherwise cast.
  • Aristocrats / SacrificeSac outlets and edicts kill the donated Kain to recur it and synergize with death triggers.
  • ReanimatorTreasure and card flow plus Whip/reanimation spells turn the engine into a steady stream of fatties.
