Lobelia, Defender of Bag End
The Commander
When Lobelia enters, look at the top card of each opponent's library and exile those cards face down.
, Sacrifice an artifact: Choose one —
• Until end of turn, you may play a card exiled with Lobelia without paying its mana cost.
• Each opponent loses 2 life and you gain 2 life.
Guide
Gameplan
Lobelia is a mono-black artifact-sacrifice value engine that steals the top card of every opponent's library on entry, then converts artifacts (especially Treasure and other tokens) into free spells or repeatable drain. You build a board of cheap artifacts and token-makers, sacrifice them to play exiled cards for free or to grind life totals, recasting Lobelia to refill the exile pile.
Strengths
- Repeatable card advantage by stealing opponents' top cards every time Lobelia enters or blinks
- Flexible sacrifice ability doubles as inevitability via incremental drain
- Synergizes with Treasure, Clue, and token producers that you'd otherwise just throw away
- Mono-black gives access to the best tutors, ramp, and recursion in the format
Weaknesses
- Slow without a steady supply of artifacts to fuel the tap ability
- Only taps once per turn, capping its raw throughput
- Heavily commander-dependent for the engine, vulnerable to repeated removal
- Color identity locks you out of efficient artifact recursion and protection from other colors
Key Cards
- Ashnod's Altar — Turns tokens and any artifact into mana, smoothing your sacrifice-fueled gameplan.
- Pitiless Plunderer — Generates Treasure every time a creature dies, endlessly feeding Lobelia's sacrifice cost.
- Marionette Master — Converts each artifact you sacrifice into massive direct damage, a clean win with Lobelia.
- Nim Deathmantle — Combined with a sac outlet and token engine it lets you reblink Lobelia to steal cards repeatedly.
- Disciple of the Vault — Punishes opponents for every artifact leaving play, turning your sac engine into a drain machine.
Upgrade Path
Add fast mana and Treasure generators (Sol Ring, Dockside Extortionist, Pitiless Plunderer) to consistently power the tap ability, plus a blink/recursion package (Nim Deathmantle, Phyrexian Reclamation) to re-trigger the steal effect. Tighten the kill with drain payoffs like Marionette Master and Disciple of the Vault, and lean on black's elite tutors (Demonic Tutor, Vampiric Tutor) to assemble your combo line reliably.

Win Conditions
- ▸Incremental drain via Lobelia's life-loss mode plus Disciple of the Vault / Marionette Master
- ▸Casting stolen opponent bombs for free to overwhelm the board
- ▸Aristocrats payoffs like Blood Artist draining the table as artifacts and creatures die
- ▸Going wide with tokens and finishing through a sacrifice-fueled alpha strike
Archetypes
- Aristocrats — Lobelia rewards sacrificing artifacts for value and life drain, pairing with death-trigger payoffs.
- Artifacts/Treasure — Treasure and token artifacts are free fuel for both modes of Lobelia's ability.
- Combo — Free-spell mode plus token-into-Treasure loops enable explosive or infinite-drain finishes.
