The Commander

Menace, ward {1}

Whenever Nashi attacks, exile up to one target legendary or Rat card from your graveyard and copy it. You may cast the copy. (You still pay its costs. A copy of a permanent spell becomes a token.)

Guide

Gameplan

Nashi is a 3-mana Sultai value engine that recasts your best legendaries (and Rats) from the graveyard each combat. Get Nashi connecting with menace and ward, then chain back fallen legendary creatures, planeswalkers, and bombs as tokens to snowball card and board advantage. You win by grinding the table out with repeated value and a powerful legends-matter or self-mill toolbox.

Strengths

  • Recurs your strongest legendaries from the graveyard every attack, turning the bin into a second hand.
  • Menace and ward {1} make it surprisingly hard to block or remove for a 3-drop.
  • Sultai colors give the best removal, ramp, card draw, and graveyard tech in the format.
  • Self-mill and reanimation naturally fuel its attack trigger.
  • Flexible toolbox—works with legends matters, reanimator, or value midrange shells.

Weaknesses

  • The trigger only works if Nashi connects, so it relies on getting in for damage each turn.
  • You still pay full mana costs for copies, which can be ramp-intensive.
  • Without graveyard fuel or evasion support, the engine sputters.
  • Graveyard hate (Rest in Peace, Bojuka Bog) shuts the deck off hard.
  • Three toughness and no built-in protection beyond ward make it vulnerable to board wipes and combat tricks.

Key Cards

  • Sakashima of a Thousand Faces — Clones a legendary while legend rule is circumvented, and pairs with Nashi to keep value engines online.
  • Reanimate — Cheaply loads or recurs bombs, but Nashi can also recast big legends from the yard for token copies.
  • Rograkh, Son of Rohgahh — As a cheap legend, it's free fodder to copy and stack equipment, but mostly any strong legend works—Nashi rewards a high legend count.
  • Cyclonic Rift — Premium blue reset that protects your board and lets Nashi keep attacking unimpeded.
  • Sword of Feast and Famine — Grants evasion and protection so Nashi reliably connects, while untapping lands to recast copies.

Upgrade Path

Raise the legendary creature density with high-impact targets (Sheoldred, Grave Titan, planeswalkers) so every Nashi attack copies something game-warping. Add fast ramp (Sol Ring, signets, Dockside Extortionist) to afford the copy costs, plus evasion/protection like Whispersilk Cloak and Lightning Greaves. Lean into self-mill (Mesmeric Orb, Hermit Druid lines) and tutors to consistently stock the graveyard with the best things to recur.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Grind out advantage by repeatedly recasting bomb legendaries until the board is overwhelming.
  • ▸Commander damage with Nashi suited up in evasive equipment.
  • ▸Recur a powerful legendary engine (Atraxa, Tasigur, etc.) to take over the game.
  • ▸Assemble a graveyard-based combo or value loop fueled by self-mill.

Archetypes

  • Legends Matter — Nashi recasting legendary cards from the graveyard rewards a deck packed with powerful legendary creatures and planeswalkers.
  • Reanimator — Self-mill plus Nashi's exile-and-copy lets you cheat or recur expensive legends repeatedly.
  • Value Midrange — Sultai colors and Nashi's recurring card advantage grind the table out with incremental two-for-ones.
  • Voltron — Menace and ward make Nashi a solid equipment/aura carrier while its attacks generate extra resources.
