Guide
Gameplan
Resolve Niv-Mizzet, Parun and turn every spell cast at the table into card draw, then convert that draw into pings that grind down opponents or fire off a lethal burst. You build a spellslinger engine of cantrips and rituals, protect Niv, and either ping each opponent to death or assemble a draw-trigger loop. Until then, you use cheap interaction and card advantage to stay ahead.
Strengths
- Each instant/sorcery cast by ANY player draws you a card, snowballing card advantage fast
- Built-in win condition: draw triggers ping any target for incremental or explosive damage
- Can't be countered, so it reliably hits the battlefield in counter-heavy metas
- Flying body and a deep blue-red toolbox of card advantage and removal
Weaknesses
- Extremely commander-dependent; the deck stalls hard without Niv on the field
- Costs six mana and is a removal magnet that demands constant protection
- No green ramp or white wraths, so it can fall behind go-wide aggro
- Draw triggers can deck you out or feed symmetrical effects if not managed
Key Cards
- Curiosity — Enchants Niv so each ping draws a card, drawing another ping in an infinite loop that kills the table.
- Ophidian Eye — Functions identically to Curiosity for a redundant draw-on-damage combo with Niv.
- Tandem Lookout — Soulbond grants the draw-on-combat-damage trigger to Niv for another infinite ping loop.
- Mystic Remora — Cheap repeatable card draw that pairs with Niv's draw-to-ping trigger for early pressure.
- Thassa's Oracle — Backup win condition since Niv loops draw your library to near zero.
- Smothering Tithe — Generates the explosive mana needed to chain spells and protect your commander.
Upgrade Path
Add fast mana and protection like Mana Drain, Mana Crypt, Dramatic Reversal plus Isochron Scepter, and Veil of Summer or Heroic Intervention to shield Niv. Tighten the spell base to high-impact cantrips and tutors (Mystical Tutor, Merchant Scroll) to find Curiosity-style combo pieces faster, and include Underworld Breach or Aetherflux Reservoir lines for redundant kills. Prioritize cheap interaction so you survive to deploy and loop your commander.

Win Conditions
- ▸Curiosity/Ophidian Eye/Tandem Lookout loop with Niv for infinite pings to kill all opponents
- ▸Incremental ping damage across many draw triggers grinding everyone down
- ▸Thassa's Oracle or Jace, Wielder of Mysteries after drawing your library empty
- ▸Large burst of spells and cantrips fueling enough pings for a lethal turn
Archetypes
- Spellslinger — Every instant and sorcery anyone casts draws you cards, rewarding a dense spell suite.
- Combo — Curiosity-style enchantments plus Niv's ping create instant-win loops.
- Control — Counters, removal, and card draw keep the board clear while Niv accrues advantage.
- Pingers/Burn — Niv's damage triggers can be amplified to burn out the whole table.
