The Locust God
The Commander
Flying
Whenever you draw a card, create a 1/1 blue and red Insect creature token with flying and haste.
: Draw a card, then discard a card.
When The Locust God dies, return it to its owner's hand at the beginning of the next end step.
Guide
Gameplan
The Locust God turns every card draw into a flying, hasty 1/1 Insect, so you build a wide swarm by chaining draw spells and engines, then convert that board into damage. Early turns set up card-draw rocks and cantrips; mid-game you deploy the God and a draw engine, then close with a mass pump, sacrifice payoff, or sheer attack volume. Its built-in recursion makes it nearly impossible to remove permanently.
Strengths
- Generates a massive token army from any repeatable card draw
- Commander recurs itself on death, dodging spot removal and counters long-term
- Built-in card advantage keeps your hand full and refuels after wraths
- Flexible win lines: combat, aristocrats, or combo from a single engine
Weaknesses
- Folds hard to board wipes if you overcommit before a payoff
- Tokens are fragile 1/1s vulnerable to any sweeper or sweeper-on-a-stick
- Needs an enabler online; without draw engines the God does little
- Mana-hungry and prone to drawing-yourself-out without lifegain or care
- Pillowfort and tax effects (Rhystic, Smothering Tithe) slow the engine
Key Cards
- Skullclamp — Equip a 1/1 Insect, it dies, and you draw two cards making two more Insects—an infinite-feeling token loop.
- The Locust God — The engine itself; every draw becomes a hasty flyer and it always comes back from the dead.
- Ashnod's Altar — Sacrifices tokens for mana to fuel draw loops and combos, and enables Skullclamp engines.
- Purphoros, God of the Forge — Each Insect entering deals 2 damage to all opponents, turning the swarm into a direct-damage kill.
- Reservoir of Karma — N/A
- Bident of Thassa — Forces attackers and draws on combat damage, snowballing your token count.
- Cyclonic Rift — Resets opposing boards so your swarm and engines close unimpeded.
Upgrade Path
Add fast mana (Sol Ring, Mana Crest, signets) and stronger wheels (Wheel of Fortune, Echo of Eons) to deploy the engine earlier and bigger. Tighten the combo package—Skullclamp, Ashnod's Altar, Purphoros, and Earthcraft/Thornbite Staff—so you have a deterministic kill, and round out with protection (Heroic Intervention, Teferi's Protection) and interaction (Counterspell, Cyclonic Rift) to survive sweepers.
Core Cards
The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.
Win Conditions
- ▸Alpha strike with a wide board of flying Insects, often after a mass pump
- ▸Purphoros or Impact Tremors burn from repeated Insect ETBs
- ▸Infinite Insect/mana loops (Skullclamp + Ashnod's Altar) feeding a drain or burn outlet
- ▸Commander damage and evasive chip damage piling up over multiple turns
Archetypes
- Tokens — Every draw makes an Insect, so the God is a token-swarm machine built around going wide.
- Spellslinger/Wheels — Wheel effects like Windfall and Wheel of Fortune draw a fistful of cards, minting Insects in bulk.
- Aristocrats — Disposable Insects feed sacrifice outlets and drain payoffs like Blood Artist and Purphoros.
- Combo — Skullclamp plus a sacrifice altar and the God form near-infinite draw, tokens, and mana loops.
