Shadowheart, Dark Justiciar
The Commander
,
, Sacrifice another creature: Draw X cards, where X is that creature's power.
Choose a Background (You can have a Background as a second commander.)
Guide
Gameplan
Shadowheart turns big-power creatures into massive card draw by sacrificing them, fueling an aristocrats/value engine that grinds opponents out. You build a board of expendable bodies and high-power threats, then convert them into cards while squeezing extra value out of every death trigger. Pick a Background to push the deck toward sacrifice synergy, ramp, or aggression, then bury the table in card advantage and recursion.
Strengths
- Repeatable, scalable card draw that outpaces almost any opponent's resources
- Strong synergy with sacrifice/aristocrats payoffs and death triggers
- Mono-black access to powerful tutors, ramp, and recursion to refuel sacrificed creatures
- Background mechanic lets you customize the second commander to your strategy
Weaknesses
- Card draw costs life and
per activation, so it can race you toward your own death
- Needs a steady supply of creatures—board wipes leave the engine dry
- Slow without high-power fodder; small tokens draw few cards
- Mono-black lacks efficient instant-speed interaction and struggles against enchantment/artifact hate
Key Cards
- Bolas's Citadel — Casting off the top of your library combos with constant card draw to chain spells and drain the table.
- Pitiless Plunderer — Generates Treasure on every sacrifice, paying for repeated Shadowheart activations.
- Reassembling Skeleton — A recursive body that returns endlessly to be sacrificed for cards and aristocrats triggers.
- Blood Artist — Turns your steady stream of sacrifices into incremental drain that becomes a wincon.
- Sheoldred, the Apocalypse — Punishes opponents and lets you draw aggressively without dying as fast.
- Mikaeus, the Unhallowed — Gives non-Human creatures undying, creating an infinite sacrifice loop for card draw and drain.
Upgrade Path
Add fast mana (Dark Ritual, Jet Medallion) and tutors (Demonic Tutor, Vampiric Tutor) to assemble engines faster, and lean into infinite loops like Mikaeus plus a free-recurring creature for a guaranteed kill. Improve survivability with lifegain payoffs (Sheoldred, Marauding Blight-Priest) so heavy drawing doesn't kill you, and run Treasure/Blood token producers to offset activation costs. Tighten the curve toward high-power, recursive fodder so every sacrifice draws multiple cards.

- ▸Large reanimated threats beating down while opponents run out of cards
Archetypes
- Aristocrats — Her sacrifice ability is the perfect outlet for death-trigger payoffs and recursive creatures.
- Reanimator — Sacrifice fat creatures for cards, then reanimate them to do it again.
- Combo — Undying or persist loops with sac outlets and Blood Artist effects close games.
- Value/Control — Out-draws opponents and grinds the game out with removal, recursion, and inevitability.
