Strefan, Maurer Progenitor
The Commander
Flying
At the beginning of your end step, create a Blood token for each player who lost life this turn.
Whenever Strefan attacks, you may sacrifice two Blood tokens. If you do, you may put a Vampire card from your hand onto the battlefield tapped and attacking. It gains indestructible until end of turn.
Guide
Gameplan
Make every player lose life each turn to flood the board with Blood tokens, then attack with Strefan to convert two Blood into a Vampire dropped tapped, attacking, and indestructible. You curve into a wide, aggressive Vampire tribal board that cheats fat Vampires into play for free and grinds value off Blood and life-loss synergies.
Strengths
- Free Vampire ETB/attack triggers each combat without paying mana, cheating huge bodies into play
- Generates a steady Blood token engine that fuels card filtering, artifact synergies, and the Strefan attack ability
- Flying evasion lets Strefan reliably connect to trigger its ability
- Strong tribal payoffs in BR Vampires plus aristocrats and life-drain support
Weaknesses
- Heavily commander-dependent; without Strefan attacking the deck loses its engine
- Vulnerable to removal and board wipes since it commits creatures to the board
- Needs reliable life loss across all opponents to maximize Blood production
- Can stall if you lack big Vampires in hand to cheat in, leaving Blood tokens underutilized
Key Cards
- Anje, Maid of Dishonor — Turns your pile of Blood tokens into repeatable drain, punishing the whole table and feeding more Blood.
- Vito, Thorn of the Dusk Rose — Doubles all your life loss into damage, weaponizing the constant life-loss that fuels Strefan's Blood production.
- Bloodthirsty Conqueror — Drains every opponent for one each time they lose life, snowballing your life total and closing games.
- Sorin, Imperious Bloodline — Builds Vampire tokens and gives the team lifelink and anthem effects to push attacks.
- Drana, Liberator of Malakir — A high-impact flyer to cheat in with Strefan, pumping your whole attacking team on connect.
- Olivia, Crimson Bride — An ideal Vampire to slam tapped and attacking, reanimating a creature into combat for explosive tempo.
Upgrade Path
Add efficient ramp (Arcane Signet, Fellwar Stone) and tutors (Diabolic Intent, Vampiric Tutor) to find your bombs and protect Strefan. Lean into life-loss payoffs—Vito, Bloodthirsty Conqueror, Sanguine Bond—so incidental damage becomes lethal, and include protection like Lightning Greaves and Heroic Intervention to keep the engine online against wipes. To go faster, prioritize the biggest impactful Vampires you can cheat into play and a Blood-token doubler like Anje to convert resources into pressure.
