The Commander

Whenever Tetsuo attacks, if it's equipped, choose one —

• Tetsuo deals damage equal to the greatest mana value among Equipment attached to it to any target.

• You may cast an instant or sorcery spell from your hand with mana value less than or equal to the greatest mana value among Equipment attached to Tetsuo without paying its mana cost.

Guide

Gameplan

Suit up Tetsuo with high-mana-value Equipment, then attack to either burn down threats/opponents or free-cast big instants and sorceries from hand. The deck plays as an aggressive Voltron/spellslinger hybrid: cheap to recast at 3 mana, Tetsuo wants to connect every turn to snowball value and damage. You win by either Voltron commander damage or chaining free-cast bombs into a finisher.

Strengths

  • Free-casting expensive instants/sorceries (Time Stretch, Expropriate, big X-burn) generates massive tempo and value
  • Cheap commander cost (3) with built-in evasion potential makes him easy to recast and protect
  • Grixis gives access to premium removal, card draw, and tutors for Equipment
  • Two distinct payoff modes make him flexible against both creatures and players

Weaknesses

  • Heavily reliant on connecting in combat and on having a high-MV Equipment attached
  • Equipment-light or Tetsuo-removed boards leave the deck doing very little
  • Vulnerable to creature removal, bounce, and edicts targeting the commander
  • Spends mana on Equipment instead of board presence, so it can stumble defensively

Key Cards

  • Batterskull — High mana value gives big damage/free-cast ceilings while its Germ token and vigilance/lifelink protect Tetsuo.
  • Colossus Hammer — Cheap to attach with Sigarda's Aid and makes Tetsuo a lethal Voltron threat fast.
  • Sword of Feast and Famine — Protection colors keep Tetsuo alive and the untap effect lets you double-spend mana each turn.
  • Sigarda's Aid — Lets you attach Equipment at flash speed and for free, enabling surprise lethal attacks.
  • Expropriate — A premier free-cast target whose game-ending value is doubled by trigger when cast off Tetsuo for free.
  • Puresteel Paladin — Free Equipment attaches with metalcraft and draws cards as Equipment hits the field.

Upgrade Path

Add efficient Equipment that enable cheap attaches (Stoneforge Mystic, Sigarda's Aid, Puresteel Paladin) and protection like Swiftfoot Boots and Lightning Greaves. Tune the instant/sorcery package toward high-impact free-cast targets and tutors (Vampiric Tutor, Demonic Tutor) to assemble Equipment plus payoffs faster. Push the mana base with fast rocks and dual lands so you can recast Tetsuo and still hold up protection.

Archetypes

  • Voltron — Tetsuo stacks Equipment to deliver lethal commander damage and ping threats on attack.
  • Spellslinger — His second mode free-casts powerful instants and sorceries from hand every combat.
  • Equipment Aggro — The whole deck is built around cheap, high-impact Equipment to fuel both of his abilities.
