Kess, Dissident Mage
The Commander
Flying
Once during each of your turns, you may cast an instant or sorcery spell from your graveyard. If a spell cast this way would be put into your graveyard, exile it instead.
Guide
Gameplan
Kess is a Grixis spellslinger that gets double value from instants and sorceries by recasting one from your graveyard each turn. You play a controlling game—removal, counters, and card draw—while building toward a spell-based combo or a value engine that buries opponents in advantage. The goal is to stockpile a graveyard full of powerful spells, then loop or chain them to generate overwhelming card and mana advantage before closing the game.
Strengths
- Built-in card advantage by recasting spells from the graveyard every turn
- Access to the best removal, counters, and tutors in Grixis colors
- Enables powerful storm/combo lines and flashback-style value loops
- Flying body lets her chip in or carry equipment while you control the board
Weaknesses
- Heavily commander-dependent; the deck stalls if Kess is repeatedly removed
- Vulnerable to graveyard hate like Rest in Peace or Bojuka Bog
- No green means no ramp or land-based fixing, leaning on artifacts
- Can be slow and reactive, struggling against fast aggro or wide token boards
Key Cards
- Dramatic Reversal — With nonland mana rocks it makes infinite mana, and Kess can recast it from the yard to combo off.
- Isochron Scepter — Imprinting Dramatic Reversal enables the classic infinite mana engine that Kess supports.
- Mystic Remora — Cheap, repeatable card draw that fuels the spell-heavy engine early.
- Underworld Breach — Turns your graveyard into a second hand, comboing with Brain Freeze or Lion's Eye Diamond for a kill.
- Jeska's Will — Explosive ritual mana plus card advantage that Kess can rebuy for a huge turn.
- Reanimate — Cheap reanimation that Kess can recast, and great for cheating big threats from the yard.
Upgrade Path
Add fast mana (Mana Crypt, Mana Vault, Jeweled Lotus) and the best tutors (Demonic Tutor, Vampiric Tutor, Mystical Tutor) to assemble combos faster and more consistently. Tighten the deck around a compact win like Underworld Breach + Lion's Eye Diamond + Brain Freeze, and add free interaction (Force of Will, Force of Negation, Pact of Negation) to protect it. Trim clunky value cards for low-curve cantrips and rituals so every recast with Kess advances the game state.
