The Commander

{1}, Sacrifice another creature: The Ever-Changing 'Dane becomes a copy of the sacrificed creature, except it has this ability.

Guide

Gameplan

You durdle in Esper colors deploying value creatures, then use the 'Dane's {1}, sac ability to morph into whatever best fits the moment—a beater, a combo piece, or a creature with a powerful ETB. Because it retains the copy ability, you can keep transforming each turn as the board evolves, recurring sacrifice fodder to grind value. You win by assembling a sacrifice/blink engine or by becoming an oversized threat backed by removal and protection.

Strengths

  • Extremely flexible: turns dead or chump creatures into exactly the body you need.
  • Repeatable, so a single 'Dane fuels engines turn after turn without re-equipping the ability.
  • Esper colors give the best removal, tutors, recursion, and card draw in the format.
  • Cheap to cast and re-cast as a 3-mana commander, hard to keep down.

Weaknesses

  • Sacrifice cost makes it card-hungry; needs constant creature fodder to function.
  • Becoming a copy can swap into a worse body or lose abilities you wanted, and it's still vulnerable to removal mid-transform.
  • No inherent evasion or protection—voltron/copy plans get blocked or wrathed.
  • Slow without an engine; pure value grind can be outpaced by faster combo decks.

Key Cards

  • Bloodthrone Vampire — A near-mirror sac outlet that, when copied, lets you pump and sacrifice repeatedly for value.
  • Grave Pact — Each creature you sacrifice to the 'Dane forces opponents to sac, turning your engine into board control.
  • Bitterblossom — A steady, free stream of fodder so the 'Dane never runs out of creatures to consume.
  • Karmic Guide — Becoming a copy of a powerful reanimation/ETB creature lets you loop bodies out of the yard.
  • Reveillark — Copying it recurs your best sacrificed creatures when the 'Dane dies or is sacrificed in a loop.
  • Phyrexian Altar — Provides mana and a free sac outlet to chain transformations and creature loops.

Upgrade Path

Add fast mana (Sol Ring, Arcane Signet) and tutors (Demonic Tutor, Diabolic Intent) to assemble engines faster, and a Buried Alive/Entomb package to set up reanimation targets. Tighten toward a compact combo line—Karmic Guide + Reveillark + free sac outlet (Phyrexian Altar/Carrion Feeder) + Blood Artist—so the value plan also closes games. Round out with efficient interaction (Swords to Plowshares, Cyclonic Rift, counterspells) to protect the engine.

Core Cards

The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.

Win Conditions

  • ▸Aristocrats drain via Blood Artist/Zulaport Cutthroat as you loop sacrifices.
  • ▸Infinite creature loops (Reveillark/Karmic Guide + sac outlet) producing infinite drain or tokens.
  • ▸Grave Pact/Dictate of Erebos edicts grinding opponents off the board, then attacking.
  • ▸Becoming a large evasive threat backed by protection and removal.

Archetypes

  • Aristocrats — The sac ability is built-in fodder consumption that pairs with death-trigger payoffs like Blood Artist and Grave Pact.
  • Reanimator — You can cheat huge creatures into play, then copy them, turning the graveyard into a toolbox of bodies.
  • Value/Blink — Copying ETB creatures and recurring fodder generates relentless incremental advantage.
  • Combo — Copying creatures like Reveillark or Karmic Guide with a sac outlet and a payoff enables infinite loops.
