Valgavoth, Terror Eater

Mana value9EDHREC#1,403

The Commander

Flying, lifelink

Ward—Sacrifice three nonland permanents.

If a card you didn't control would be put into an opponent's graveyard from anywhere, exile it instead.

During your turn, you may play cards exiled with Valgavoth. If you cast a spell this way, pay life equal to its mana value rather than pay its mana cost.

Guide

Gameplan

Valgavoth turns opponents' graveyards into your hand: anything that would hit an opponent's graveyard gets exiled under Valgavoth, and you can cast those cards by paying life instead of mana. Force mass discard, mill, and creature death across the table, then cast their best spells and creatures for free (just life), all while Valgavoth's lifelink keeps your total high. You stall behind a 9/9 flier with brutal ward and grind opponents out of resources.

Strengths

  • Massive card advantage by stealing every spell/permanent that would enter an opponent's graveyard
  • Lifelink on a 9/9 flier offsets the life payments and stabilizes against aggro
  • Ward—sacrifice three nonland permanents is extremely hard to pay, making him sticky
  • Punishes graveyard, sacrifice, mill, and discard strategies your opponents rely on
  • Mono-black gives access to top-tier ramp, tutors, and recursion

Weaknesses

  • Nine mana means he arrives late and is purely a value engine, not a fast clock
  • Exile-based removal and bounce sidestep his replacement effect and ward
  • Casting via life can race you out without enough lifegain or board control
  • Mono-black struggles with enchantments and resilient artifacts
  • If opponents avoid filling graveyards, Valgavoth's payoff slows considerably

Key Cards

  • Bojuka BogDemonstrates the synergy of graveyard hate, but more importantly mass-discard and mill effects feed Valgavoth's exile zone.
  • MindslicerForces everyone to discard their hands straight into exile under your control for you to cast.
  • Syr Konrad, the GrimPings opponents every time their cards leave the graveyard or die, turning Valgavoth's effect into damage.
  • Bontu's Last ReckoningA cheap board wipe that dumps every opponent creature into your exile pile to recast.
  • Mikaeus, the UnhallowedPowerful payoff and sacrifice/recursion engine that pairs with the deck's grindy plan.
  • NecropotenceConverts your high life total from lifelink into explosive card draw.

Upgrade Path

Add fast mana (Dark Ritual, Crypt, Sol Ring, mana rocks) so Valgavoth lands earlier and ahead of curve. Lean into proactive graveyard-filling—edicts, board wipes, and group mill like Mindslicer—plus lifegain sources to fuel free casts safely. Round out with strong tutors (Demonic, Vampiric), recursion, and a couple of compact combos or drain payoffs to convert your massive card advantage into a fast kill.
