Chulane, Teller of Tales
The Commander
Whenever you cast a creature spell, draw a card, then you may put a land card from your hand onto the battlefield.
,
: Return target creature you control to its owner's hand.
Guide
Gameplan
Chulane turns every creature you cast into a card and a free land drop, snowballing your board and mana while you chain value creatures. You ramp into Chulane early, then flood the battlefield with cheap creatures and ETB effects, eventually deploying a combo or an overwhelming army to close. The bounce ability lets you reuse enters-the-battlefield triggers and protect key creatures.
Strengths
- Free card draw and land drops on every creature cast keeps your hand and mana refueling constantly
- Bant colors give access to the best ramp, tutors, protection, and blink synergies
- Built-in bounce ability enables ETB loops and rescues creatures from removal
- Naturally supports infinite combos with cheap bounce-and-recast creatures
Weaknesses
- Triggers only on casting creatures, so token strategies and noncreature spells get no value
- Heavily commander-dependent; repeated removal of Chulane stalls the engine
- No built-in interaction, leaving you open to faster combo and stax decks
- Can draw hate as a known value/combo engine commander
Key Cards
- Aluren — Lets you cast cheap creatures for free, triggering Chulane repeatedly to draw and ramp, and enabling combos.
- Shrieking Drake — With Aluren it bounces itself for free, looping Chulane to draw your deck.
- Whitemane Lion — Self-bouncing one-drop that combos with Aluren and Chulane for infinite draw and landfall triggers.
- Cloudstone Curio — Bounces creatures when you cast others, fueling Chulane loops without needing Aluren.
- Temur Sabertooth — Provides repeatable bounce and protection to recur ETB creatures and dodge removal.
- Walking Ballista — A natural payoff that becomes a wincon when you generate infinite mana or loops.
Upgrade Path
Add fast mana and rocks (Mana Crypt, Sol Ring, Mana Vault) plus efficient tutors (Worldly Tutor, Eladamri's Call, Chord of Calling) to assemble Aluren combos faster. Tighten the creature base toward self-bouncing pieces and payoffs while adding interaction like Swords to Plowshares, Cyclonic Rift, and free counterspells. Improve mana consistency and cut high-cost value creatures that don't advance the combo plan.

Win Conditions
- ▸Aluren loop with a bouncing creature plus a damage outlet like Walking Ballista or Thassa's Oracle
- ▸Infinite landfall or draw fueling Finale of Devastation or a huge X spell
- ▸Overwhelming board of value creatures finishing with Craterhoof Behemoth or Overrun effects
- ▸Drawing your library into a clean combo or alpha strike
Archetypes
- Combo — Aluren plus self-bouncing creatures and Chulane's draw enable deterministic infinite loops.
- Value Midrange — Chaining ETB creatures draws cards and ramps lands for an inevitable board advantage.
- Blink — Chulane's bounce and Bant flicker effects maximize repeated enters-the-battlefield value.
- Lands/Ramp — Free land drops off creature casts let you abuse landfall and big-mana payoffs.
