Firkraag, Cunning Instigator
The Commander
Flying, haste
Whenever one or more Dragons you control attack an opponent, goad target creature that player controls.
Whenever a creature deals combat damage to one of your opponents, if that creature had to attack this combat, you put a +1/+1 counter on Firkraag and you draw a card.
Guide
Gameplan
Build a wide Dragon-heavy board that attacks every turn, using Firkraag's goad triggers to force opponents' creatures into combat with each other. When those goaded creatures connect, you grow Firkraag and refill your hand, turning the table's own armies into your card-advantage engine while you race in the air.
Strengths
- Snowballing card advantage from goad triggers that opponents can't easily avoid
- Goad acts as soft removal/political deterrence, redirecting threats away from you
- Cheap, evasive, hasty commander that pressures life totals immediately
- Plays politics naturally—your goad helps whichever opponent you point it at
Weaknesses
- Goad only triggers card draw when goaded creatures hit OTHER opponents, so payoff depends on board states you don't fully control
- Relies on a critical mass of Dragons, which are expensive and vulnerable to board wipes
- Izzet lacks reliable recursion if your Dragon board gets swept
- Pillowfort/fog effects from opponents can blank your goad value
- Stalled or creatureless opponents (control decks) reduce goad utility
Key Cards
- Disrupt Decorum — Mass goad turns the entire table against itself, maximizing Firkraag's draw triggers in one swing.
- Frenzied Saddlebrute — Cheap goad-everything-of-yours enabler that synergizes with the 'had to attack' clause for card draw.
- Sephara, Sky's Blade — Wide Dragon-flier payoffs love anthem and protection effects to keep the air force connecting.
- Terror of the Peaks — Damage-on-ETB Dragon that punishes opponents and clears blockers for your goaded swings.
- Glasses of Urd — Forces creatures to attack, combining with goad to guarantee Firkraag's draw-and-grow trigger.
- Dragon Tempest — Gives haste and deals burst damage as Dragons enter, accelerating the aggressive plan.
- Scourge of Valkas — Scales burn damage with your Dragon count, providing reach to close games.
Upgrade Path
Tighten the curve with efficient mana rocks (Arcane Signet, Fellwar Stone) and strong Dragon payoffs (Dragonlord's Servant, Sarkhan's Triumph) to ensure consistent boards. Add repeatable goad enablers like Court of Ire and protection such as Heroic Intervention to survive wipes, and lean into burn finishers (Bonecrusher Giant-style reach) so you can close even when goad politics stall. For higher power, run more fast mana and selective interaction to protect your snowball before opponents stabilize.

- Goad/Politics — His attack trigger and combat-damage payoff weaponize goad to control opponents and draw cards.

- Spellslinger Burn — Izzet support package of burn and card draw closes games when combat stalls.
