The Commander

At the beginning of your end step, if you control no creatures with decayed, create a 2/2 black Zombie creature token with decayed. (It can't block. When it attacks, sacrifice it at end of combat.)

Guide

Gameplan

Jadar is a mono-black aristocrats/sacrifice engine that pumps out a free 2/2 decayed Zombie every turn you don't have one. You convert that steady stream of bodies into value via sacrifice outlets, drain effects, and token doublers, grinding opponents down while keeping a constant supply of fodder. The game ends through repeated drain triggers, a wide overrun, or a sacrifice-based combo.

Strengths

  • Generates a free body every end step with zero mana investment, fueling sacrifice synergies indefinitely
  • Cheap 2-mana commander that's hard to keep down and rebuilds quickly after wipes
  • Mono-black gives access to the best tutors, removal, and recursion in the format
  • Excellent resilience to board wipes since the engine restarts immediately

Weaknesses

  • Decayed tokens can't block, so the deck is poor at defending early and against aggro
  • Only makes one token per turn baseline, so it's slow without doublers or extra outlets
  • Mono-black means no access to enchantment/artifact removal beyond limited options
  • Removing Jadar shuts off the engine until you recast him

Key Cards

  • Pitiless PlundererTurns every sacrificed decayed Zombie into Treasure, generating explosive mana and ramp.
  • Bastion of RemembranceDrains each opponent every time a creature you control dies, converting the token stream into life loss.
  • Zulaport CutthroatClassic aristocrats drain that punishes every Zombie sacrifice for incremental reach.
  • Grave PactForces opponents to sacrifice creatures whenever yours die, a powerful repeatable edict engine with Jadar's fodder.
  • SkullclampEquip onto a fresh decayed Zombie to draw two cards every turn cycle, the best card advantage engine for the deck.
  • Mikaeus, the UnhallowedCombos with a free sacrifice outlet and a persist creature, and buffs your Zombie army.
  • Ashnod's AltarFree sacrifice outlet that converts the end-step Zombie into mana to fuel the deck.

Upgrade Path

Add fast mana (Dark Ritual, Sol Ring, Bubbling Muck) and tutors (Demonic Tutor, Vampiric Tutor, Diabolic Intent) to assemble your combo pieces faster. Lean into a clean two-card kill like Pitiless Plunderer + Ashnod's Altar + a drain outlet, or Mikaeus + a persist sac loop, and run Bolas's Citadel and Necropotence for card advantage. Cap it off with strong protection and recursion (Heroic Intervention substitute via mono-black: Imp's Mischief, plus Phyrexian Reclamation) to keep the engine online.
