Siegfried, Famed Swordsman
The Commander
Menace
When Siegfried enters, mill three cards. Then put X +1/+1 counters on Siegfried, where X is twice the number of creature cards in your graveyard.
Guide
Gameplan
Siegfried is a mono-black voltron beater that snowballs out of your graveyard: mill creatures, then stack twice as many counters on him to swing for huge menace damage. Spend the early game self-milling and ramping, drop Siegfried as a one-card threat that's already enormous off a fat creature-heavy yard, then protect him and connect for lethal commander damage in two or three swings.
Strengths
- Comes down as an immediate huge body — easily 10/10+ with a stocked graveyard, with no extra investment.
- Menace makes him hard to chump-block, accelerating the voltron clock.
- Mono-black gives premium tutors, removal, and recursion to find equipment and protection.
- Self-mill synergy doubles as fuel for reanimation and graveyard payoffs.
Weaknesses
- Counters mean targeted removal, bounce, or -X/-X is a full reset that costs you all the work.
- His size depends on creatures in the yard, so an empty graveyard makes him a vanilla 0/0+counters dud.
- Graveyard hate (Rest in Peace, Bojuka Bog) can blank the enters trigger entirely.
- Mono-black lacks protective counterspells and struggles with persistent flyers/blockers without evasion tech.
Key Cards
- Whispersilk Cloak — Grants unblockable and shroud, turning Siegfried into an untargetable, unstoppable voltron threat.
- Stitcher's Supplier — Cheap repeatable self-mill that stuffs the graveyard with creatures to maximize Siegfried's counters.
- Lightning Greaves — Haste plus shroud lets him attack the turn he lands while dodging removal.
- Buried Alive — Instantly dumps three creatures into your yard, adding six counters and enabling reanimation.
- Swiftfoot Boots — Hexproof and haste protect your snowballing commander and let him swing immediately.
- Cabal Coffers — Mono-black ramp engine to power tutors, recast Siegfried, and fund protection.
Upgrade Path
Add fast mana (Dark Ritual, Sol Ring) and tutors (Demonic Tutor, Stoneforge Mystic) to assemble protective equipment faster. Lean harder into self-mill (Hermit Druid, Mesmeric Orb) so Siegfried enters at lethal size, and pack instant-speed protection (Heroic Intervention substitute Malakir Rebirth, Apostle's Blessing) plus reanimation to insure against board wipes. Cut clunky vanilla creatures for low-cost evasion enablers and graveyard payoffs that win even when Siegfried is answered.

Win Conditions
- ▸Connect with an evasive, counter-loaded Siegfried for 21 commander damage in two or three swings.
- ▸Reanimate fatties milled away to overwhelm the board alongside Siegfried.
- ▸Add trample/double strike (Whispersilk + Fireshrieker effects) to one-shot opponents.
- ▸Grind value with aristocrats drains while Siegfried pressures life totals.
Archetypes
- Voltron — Siegfried is a self-sufficient commander-damage threat that wants equipment and evasion to close fast.
- Self-Mill / Graveyard — Twice the creature cards in your yard rewards aggressive milling and filling the graveyard.
- Reanimator — All the creatures you mill to grow Siegfried double as reanimation targets via Reanimate and Animate Dead.
- Aristocrats — Black sacrifice and recursion turn the creature-heavy build into a value engine alongside the voltron plan.
