Tamiyo, Inquisitive Student // Tamiyo, Seasoned Scholar
The Commander
Flying
Whenever Tamiyo attacks, investigate. (Create a Clue token. It's an artifact with ", Sacrifice this token: Draw a card.")
When you draw your third card in a turn, exile Tamiyo, then return her to the battlefield transformed under her owner's control.
+2: Until your next turn, whenever a creature attacks you or a planeswalker you control, it gets -1/-0 until end of turn.
−3: Return target instant or sorcery card from your graveyard to your hand. If it's a green card, add one mana of any color.
−7: Draw cards equal to half the number of cards in your library, rounded up. You get an emblem with "You have no maximum hand size."
Guide
Gameplan
Tamiyo enters as a cheap evasive attacker that investigates each combat, fueling card draw and powering up your engine. Build around drawing your third card each turn to flip her into a planeswalker that recurs your best instants and sorceries (with green mana rebates) and ultimately draws half your deck. You snowball card advantage while protecting yourself, then close with a spell-fueled combo or an overwhelming board.
Strengths
- One-mana commander that's hard to remove profitably and replaces itself via Clues and the flip
- Recursion of instants/sorceries on the back side gives near-inexhaustible value and combo redundancy
- Excellent in spellslinger and draw-matters shells thanks to the third-card trigger
- Cheap to recast and re-flip, making her resilient to removal
- Color identity gives access to the best card advantage, ramp, and tutor support
Weaknesses
- Front side is a fragile 1/2 that dies to almost any removal or chip damage
- Flipping requires reliably drawing three cards a turn, which can stall without enablers
- Planeswalker side has low loyalty and is vulnerable to attacks if you tap out
- Limited interaction with permanents—struggles against resolved threats and stax
- Can be card-advantage-rich but win-condition-poor without a dedicated kill
Key Cards
- Mystic Remora — Cheap repeatable draw that helps trigger the third-card flip while pressuring opponents.
- Brainstorm — Instant-speed triple-draw on the cheap, reliably flipping Tamiyo at the right moment.
- Snapcaster Mage — Synergizes with the graveyard-recursion side and adds to your draw count.
- Reliquary Tower — Lets you hoard the cards her ultimate and engines generate without discarding.
- Cyclonic Rift — A premier recurrable bomb to loop with her −3 for repeated board resets.
- Thassa's Oracle — With her −7 emptying your library, it provides a clean win condition.
Upgrade Path
Lean into cheap cantrips (Ponder, Preordain, Brainstorm, Opt) and draw engines (Mystic Remora, Rhystic Study) to flip her consistently, then add a tight instant/sorcery package worth recurring. Include a compact combo finish—Thassa's Oracle plus her ultimate, or Underworld Breach-style loops—and fast mana like Sol Ring, Mana Crypt, and dorks to deploy and protect her early. Cut high-cost permanents in favor of efficient interaction (Swan Song, Fierce Guardianship, Cyclonic Rift) that her −3 can buy back.
Core Cards
The most-played cards for this commander, built from aggregated deck data (the Mythic Graph). Build public decks to seed it.
Win Conditions
- ▸Loop a recurred bomb like Cyclonic Rift or a removal/counter package to lock the game, then beat down
- ▸Combo finish via Thassa's Oracle or Laboratory Maniac after the −7 ultimate empties your library
- ▸Storm/burn finish powered by recurring cheap spells with her −3 mana rebate
- ▸Grind to overwhelming card advantage and win with evasive threats or token swarms
Archetypes
- Spellslinger — Her flip side recurs instants and sorceries with mana rebates, rewarding a dense spell base.
- Control — Investigate, card draw, and recurring counters/removal let you grind opponents out.
- Combo — Endless card draw and instant/sorcery recursion can assemble loops or storm finishes.
- Draw-Matters — The third-card-drawn flip turns wheels and cantrips into engine triggers.
