The Speed Demon
The Commander
Flying, trample
Start your engines! (If you have no speed, it starts at 1. It increases once on each of your turns when an opponent loses life. Max speed is 4.)
At the beginning of your end step, you draw X cards and lose X life, where X is your speed.
Guide
Gameplan
Drop The Speed Demon, get your speed cranking to max 4 as fast as possible by chipping opponents' life totals, then convert that into a card-advantage engine that draws up to 4 cards per turn at the cost of 4 life. You leverage cheap evasive attackers, pingers, and 'each opponent loses life' effects to hit max speed quickly, then bury the table in card advantage while keeping yourself alive with lifegain and life-as-resource payoffs.
Strengths
- Built-in repeatable card advantage that rivals the best black draw engines once at max speed
- Evasive 6/6 flier with trample is a real clock and easy Voltron threat
- Speed increments off any opponent losing life, so it synergizes with aristocrats, pingers, and group-slug effects
- Mono-black gives access to the deck's best tutors, ramp, and recursion
Weaknesses
- The end-step draw is mandatory and can deck you out or kill you via life loss if unchecked
- Heavily reliant on having life to spend; aggressive metas punish the life payment hard
- Speed resets to nothing if the commander situation stalls—needs consistent damage triggers
- Removal-magnet: a 5-mana flier that draws cards will eat the table's interaction
Key Cards
- Bolas's Citadel — Turns your fat life total and card draw into explosive free spell-casting, perfect with the Demon's engine.
- Sign in Blood — Representative of black's life-for-cards theme that the Demon both fuels and competes with—keep these cheap to avoid overdrawing.
- Bontu's Monument — Drains each opponent on your creature casts, reliably advancing speed while building a board.
- Greven, Predator Captain — Pairs life loss with extra draw and damage, leaning into the life-as-resource and aggression plan.
- Sanguine Bond — Converts your incidental lifegain into opponent life loss, simultaneously winning and pushing speed to max.
- Witch's Clinic — Lifelink and ward on the commander keeps you topped off to pay for the end-step draws.
Upgrade Path
Add fast mana (Dark Ritual, Jet Medallion) and efficient tutors (Demonic Tutor, Vampiric Tutor) to assemble your engine and protect the commander sooner. Tighten the lifegain/life-payoff package—Vito or Sanguine Bond plus a lifelink source—so the end-step draws never threaten you, and lean into reliable ping/drain enablers like Bontu's Monument or Sangromancer to lock speed at 4 every game. Finally, include a payoff like Bolas's Citadel or Aetherflux Reservoir to convert your card surplus into an instant win.

Win Conditions
- ▸Commander damage from the evasive 6/6 flier, often pumped with equipment or auras
- ▸Converting massed card advantage into a haymaker like Bolas's Citadel or Torment of Hailfire
- ▸Aristocrats/drain payoffs (Blood Artist, Zulaport Cutthroat, Sanguine Bond) finishing the table
- ▸Out-resourcing opponents and grinding them out with overwhelming card velocity
Archetypes
- Aristocrats — Sacrifice and drain effects repeatedly make opponents lose life, accelerating speed every turn while generating value.
- Voltron — A 6/6 evasive flier with trample only needs a couple of buffs and lifelink to close games and stay fueled.
- Life Drain / Group Slug — Cards that make each opponent lose life trigger speed and chip toward lethal.
- Reanimator — Mono-black recursion lets you cheat the Demon and other big drainers back, restarting the engine after removal.
