The Commander

{T}: Return target creature card from your graveyard to the battlefield. It's a Skeleton in addition to its other types and has no abilities. Activate only as a sorcery.

Guide

Gameplan

Xu-Ifit is a repeatable, free reanimation engine on a cheap mono-black body. Fill your graveyard with self-mill and discard, then each turn tap Xu-Ifit to reanimate a fat creature as a vanilla Skeleton to crash in for damage or to feed sacrifice/aristocrat loops. You go wider/bigger than the table can answer while draining life and recurring threats from the yard.

Strengths

  • Free, repeatable reanimation every turn from a 3-mana commander that's easy to recast.
  • Color-identity recursion lets you abuse removal — your creatures keep coming back as Skeletons.
  • Pairs perfectly with aristocrats: reanimate, sacrifice, reanimate again for grindy value.
  • Cheap to deploy, so you have mana to develop a board, untappers, and protection alongside it.

Weaknesses

  • 'Has no abilities' strips ETBs, static buffs, and death triggers from reanimated creatures, so you only get raw stats.
  • Sorcery-speed and the tap symbol make it slow and easy to disrupt with removal or untap denial.
  • Mono-black means no blue counterspells or green ramp/recursion to backstop the engine.
  • Entirely commander-dependent — kill Xu-Ifit and the engine stalls; it builds card disadvantage if removed repeatedly.
  • Empty graveyard = dead commander, so it needs heavy self-mill enablers.

Key Cards

  • Buried AliveStuffs three fat creatures directly into the yard as immediate reanimation fuel for Xu-Ifit.
  • Stitcher's SupplierCheap, repeatable self-mill that loads the graveyard with bodies to reanimate.
  • Ashnod's AltarFree sacrifice outlet that loops reanimated Skeletons for mana and aristocrat triggers.
  • Blood ArtistTurns each reanimate-and-sacrifice loop into incremental life drain, a real win route since dead creatures' own triggers are gone.
  • Thousand-Year ElixirUntaps Xu-Ifit to reanimate twice a turn and grants pseudo-haste for ignoring the sorcery clause feel.
  • Umbral MantleMono-black-legal untap engine that lets you reanimate multiple times per turn with enough mana.
  • Lord of ExtinctionA massive vanilla body that's enormous purely from your stocked graveyard — perfect since its stats survive ability removal.
  • Gray Merchant of AsphodelEven as a Skeleton its body is fine, and you can cast it normally for devotion drain to close games.

Upgrade Path

Add fast mana (Dark Ritual, Sol Ring) and black tutors (Demonic Tutor, Vampiric Tutor, Buried Alive) to assemble your engine faster. Lean into a tight aristocrats combo package — Ashnod's Altar/Phyrexian Altar, a Blood Artist effect, and an untapper like Umbral Mantle or Magewright's Stone — for a deterministic kill. Round out with reanimation backups (Reanimate, Animate Dead, Victimize) so you aren't reliant on Xu-Ifit surviving, plus protection like Swiftfoot Boots and recursion such as Phyrexian Reclamation.

  • Gray Merchant of Asphodel devotion drain backed by recurring bodies.

Archetypes

  • ReanimatorThe core function: mill big creatures and return them every turn for free.
  • AristocratsLoop reanimated bodies through sacrifice outlets with Blood Artist effects for repeated drain.
  • Skeleton TribalEvery creature Xu-Ifit returns becomes a Skeleton, enabling Skeleton lords and payoffs.
  • ComboFree reanimation plus a sac outlet, untapper, and an aristocrat creates near-infinite drain loops.
