Animar, Soul of Elements
The Commander
Protection from white and from black
Whenever you cast a creature spell, put a +1/+1 counter on Animar.
Creature spells you cast cost less to cast for each +1/+1 counter on Animar.
Guide
Gameplan
Resolve Animar early, then snowball +1/+1 counters off every creature you cast until your creatures become nearly free, letting you chain your whole deck in a single explosive turn. You win by deploying an overwhelming board, abusing cast-triggers and ETB value, or assembling an infinite-creature combo. Protection from white and black makes Animar resilient to most spot removal.
Strengths
- Insane cost reduction enables huge turns and explosive combo finishes
- Protection from white and black dodges the most common targeted removal (Swords, Path, most edicts dodged by counters)
- Deep combo support with creatures like Ancestral Statue and Walking Ballista
- Self-protecting commander that snowballs quickly and grinds value off ETBs
Weaknesses
- Heavily commander-dependent; loses tempo badly to repeated Animar removal
- Board wipes and creature-light recovery hurt since the engine is creatures
- Vulnerable to counterspells protecting the combo turn since it's all-in
- Bounce and tuck effects reset counters or set you back hard
Key Cards
- Ancestral Statue — With three or more counters it bounces a land/permanent for free, recasting infinitely to grow Animar and pump combo enablers.
- Walking Ballista — Free recursion target and a payoff that machine-guns the table for the win once creatures cost nothing.
- Cloudstone Curio — Bounce-and-recast loops with cheap creatures generate infinite casts and ETB triggers.
- Cathartic Reunion — Stand-in for card advantage; Animar wants cheap card draw and tutors like Imperial Recruiter to find combo pieces.
- Imperial Recruiter — Tutors up Ancestral Statue, Walking Ballista, or value creatures to assemble wins.
- Cavern of Souls — Protects your commander and creature spells from counter-heavy control decks.
Upgrade Path
Add fast mana (Sol Ring, Mana Crystals, Birds of Paradise) to land Animar on turn two and protect it with Heroic Intervention and Cavern of Souls. Tighten the combo package around Ancestral Statue + Walking Ballista plus enablers like Cloudstone Curio and Temur Sabertooth, and add tutors (Imperial Recruiter, Worldly Tutor, Eldritch Evolution) to find them consistently. Prioritize low-mana-value creatures so the cost reduction makes them genuinely free.

Win Conditions
- ▸Infinite damage via Walking Ballista with a free-cast loop
- ▸Infinite ETB triggers (Purphoros, Impact Tremors, blood artist effects) draining the table
- ▸Overwhelming creature swarm built from near-free casts
Archetypes
- Combo — Free creature casts plus Ancestral Statue or Cloudstone Curio loops produce infinite ETBs and lethal Walking Ballista.
- Creature Tribal/Midrange — Cost reduction lets you flood the board with value creatures faster than anyone else.
- Blink/ETB Value — Cheap creatures and bounce engines abuse enter-the-battlefield triggers for snowballing advantage.
