Cao Ren, Wei Commander

Gameplan

Cao Ren is a mono-black evasive beater that hits for 3 every turn thanks to horsemanship (virtually no one can block him). You ramp into him, suit him up with Voltron equipment and auras, and grind opponents down with repeatable unblockable damage while leveraging black's recursion and tutors to keep the threat online.

Key Cards

• Whispersilk Cloak — Stacks unblockable redundancy and grants shroud to protect your equipped beater.
• Lightning Greaves — Haste and shroud let Cao Ren attack the turn he lands while dodging targeted removal.
• Quietus Spike — Turns his unblockable hits into halve-their-life-total clocks, accelerating commander-damage and life loss kills.
• Whip of Erebos — Lifelink offsets his enter-the-battlefield life loss and Cao Ren's own attacks.
• Sword of Feast and Famine — Untaps your lands and strips a card each connect, snowballing tempo and resources.

Upgrade Path

Lean fully into Voltron protection (Swiftfoot Boots, Champion's Helm, Mask of Avacyn) and damage doublers like Gratuitous Violence to one-shot opponents through evasion. Add fast mana (Sol Ring, Mana Vault, Dark Ritual) and tutors (Demonic Tutor, Vampiric Tutor, Stoneforge Mystic) to assemble your kill suite consistently. Round out with reanimation and recursion so losing Cao Ren or your equipment never stops the clock.
