Chatterfang, Squirrel General
The Commander
Forestwalk (This creature can't be blocked as long as defending player controls a Forest.)
If one or more tokens would be created under your control, those tokens plus that many 1/1 green Squirrel creature tokens are created instead.
, Sacrifice X Squirrels: Target creature gets +X/-X until end of turn.
Guide
Gameplan
Flood the board with Squirrels by doubling every token you make, then convert that army into damage or use Chatterfang's sacrifice ability to wipe out blockers and creatures. You ramp early, deploy token engines mid-game, and close with overwhelming wide attacks, an anthem swing, or an aristocrats drain loop.
Strengths
- Doubles ALL tokens, not just Squirrels, supercharging any token generator in BG
- Built-in removal/board control via the
, sacrifice X Squirrels ability
- Cheap 3-mana commander that builds a board fast and recurs easily
- Flexible across go-wide aggro, aristocrats, and combo lines
Weaknesses
- Extremely vulnerable to board wipes that erase your whole army at once
- Token strategies fold to Forsaken Monument-style hate, stax, and effects like Torpor Orb don't matter but graveyard/sac hate hurts loops
- Can be mana-hungry to rebuild after a sweeper
- Removal-light against problematic noncreature permanents without dedicated answers
Key Cards
- Parallel Lives — Stacks multiplicatively with Chatterfang, turning each token into four.
- Doubling Season — Quadruples tokens alongside Chatterfang and doubles planeswalker loyalty/counters.
- Pitiless Plunderer — Turns sacrificed Squirrels into Treasure, fueling explosive mana and combo loops.
- Ashnod's Altar — Free sacrifice outlet that generates mana for combos and Chatterfang's ability.
- Skullclamp — Premier card draw engine—1/1 Squirrels die and refill your hand instantly.
- Squirrel Mob — A scaling threat that grows with your Squirrel count for explosive damage.
Upgrade Path
Add token doublers (Doubling Season, Parallel Lives, Mondrak), free sacrifice outlets (Ashnod's Altar, Phyrexian Altar), and payoffs like Blood Artist, Zulaport Cutthroat, and Pitiless Plunderer to build infinite loops. Tighten the mana with Sol Ring, fast green rocks, and dorks, and include protection like Heroic Intervention plus a Craterhoof Behemoth finisher; cut win-more anthems for tutors (Worldly Tutor, Demonic Tutor) to assemble combos reliably.
