Ygra, Eater of All
The Commander
Ward—Sacrifice a Food.
Other creatures are Food artifacts in addition to their other types and have ",
, Sacrifice this permanent: You gain 3 life."
Whenever a Food is put into a graveyard from the battlefield, put two +1/+1 counters on Ygra.
Guide
Gameplan
Ygra turns every creature on every battlefield into Food, so any creature dying feeds Ygra two +1/+1 counters and grows it into a fast, recurring threat. You sacrifice your own creatures (and even your opponents') for value while snowballing Ygra into lethal commander damage. Closing out games is often a single connection, an Aristocrats drain, or eating the whole board.
Strengths
- Snowballs into a massive evasive threat extremely quickly off any creature deaths, even opponents' boards
- Built-in card advantage and resilience through sacrifice synergies and Food generation
- Ward—Sacrifice a Food is cheap protection since the whole board is Food
- Can eat opponents' creatures via edict and sac-outlet effects, doubling as removal
Weaknesses
- Heavily commander-dependent; without Ygra the deck loses its engine and counter payoff
- Vulnerable to exile-based and bounce removal that dodges the death trigger and counters
- Ygra's static ability also helps opponents sac your creatures and gain life
- Commander-damage plan can be stopped cold by a single fog, blocker, or removal at the wrong time
Key Cards
- Ashnod's Altar — Free sac outlet that turns any creature into mana while feeding Ygra counters.
- Goblin Bombardment — Repeatable, instant-speed sacrifice that pings and grows Ygra without paying the Food activation cost.
- Skullclamp — Draws two cards off every creature you sacrifice while the death triggers Ygra.
- Mikaeus, the Unhallowed — Lets non-Human creatures return on death for infinite sacrifice loops alongside a free sac outlet.
- Pitiless Plunderer — Generates Treasure on each death, fueling the Food sacrifice activation and ramp.
- Fiend Artisan — Tutors creatures to the battlefield while serving as a sac outlet that scales with the graveyard.
- Trample enabler like Rancor — Ensures the huge Ygra connects for lethal commander damage through chump blockers.
Upgrade Path
Add fast mana and efficient tutors (Vampiric Tutor, Worldly Tutor, Demonic Tutor) to assemble your sac engine and protection faster. Lean into free or no-mana sac outlets (Viscera Seer, Carrion Feeder, Goblin Bombardment) plus drain payoffs and a recursion loop (Mikaeus + Walking Ballista/persist) for a deterministic combo finish. Round out with cheap protection like Heroic Intervention and trample/evasion enablers so the Voltron plan is harder to interrupt.
