Meren of Clan Nel Toth
The Commander
Whenever another creature you control dies, you get an experience counter.
At the beginning of your end step, choose target creature card in your graveyard. If that card's mana value is less than or equal to the number of experience counters you have, return it to the battlefield. Otherwise, put it into your hand.
Guide
Gameplan
Meren turns your graveyard into a recurring resource engine, sacrificing creatures for value and bringing them back every end step. Early turns you ramp and seed the yard, then snowball experience counters off creature deaths until you're free-reanimating threats each turn. You grind opponents out with value loops, then convert that engine into a combo or overwhelming board.
Strengths
- Extremely resilient value engine that recurs your best creatures every turn
- Sacrifice synergies generate card advantage, ramp, and removal simultaneously
- Hard to keep down — graveyard recursion shrugs off spot removal
- Snowballs out of control if left unchecked via experience counters
Weaknesses
- Heavily reliant on the graveyard, so exile effects and grave hate cripple it
- Slow to set up; can be outpaced by fast combo decks
- Experience counters reset to needing creatures dying — sweepers help but stall the engine
- Lacks interaction with noncreature permanents without dedicated picks
Key Cards
- Sakura-Tribe Elder — Ramps and chump blocks for free, feeding Meren experience while fixing mana repeatedly.
- Viscera Seer — Free sacrifice outlet that converts dying creatures into experience counters and scry.
- Eternal Witness — Recurs any card from the graveyard and loops with Meren for repeatable value.
- Mikaeus, the Unhallowed — Combos with Walking Ballista or persist creatures for infinite loops and a major payoff.
- Reveillark — Returns small creatures on death and enables loops with Karmic Guide and a sac outlet.
- Dictate of Erebos — Turns your sacrifice engine into one-sided board wipes against opponents.
Upgrade Path
Tighten the curve toward cheap value creatures and free sac outlets so Meren reliably recurs something every turn. Add dedicated combo lines (Mikaeus + Walking Ballista, Reveillark + Karmic Guide + Viscera Seer) and aristocrat payoffs like Blood Artist and Zulaport Cutthroat to convert loops into wins. Improve ramp (Birds of Paradise, Sol Ring, Carpet of Flowers) and protect the engine with graveyard recursion redundancy and minimal grave-hate vulnerability.
