Honest Rutstein
The Commander
When Honest Rutstein enters, return target creature card from your graveyard to your hand.
Creature spells you cast cost less to cast.
Guide
Gameplan
Honest Rutstein is a creatures-matter value engine: he refills your hand on entry and makes every creature spell cheaper, letting you flood the board faster than opponents. You grind through the early game with mana dorks and recursion, then snowball into big creatures, sacrifice loops, or wide boards that close games. Reanimation and graveyard recursion keep your gas flowing all game.
Strengths
- Built-in card advantage that returns a creature every time he enters or recasts
- Universal creature cost reduction accelerates your whole curve and big-mana payoffs
- Golgari graveyard recursion makes him resilient and hard to grind out
- Synergizes with go-wide, aristocrats, and reanimator shells equally well
Weaknesses
- Cost reduction only helps creatures, doing nothing for noncreature spells or combos
- No evasion or protection on a fragile 3-mana body
- Vulnerable to graveyard hate that shuts off recursion plans
- Can be slow against fast combo or dedicated stax without a strong early curve
Key Cards
- Eternal Witness — Recurs any card and pairs with blink/sac to abuse Rutstein-style value loops.
- Phyrexian Altar — Enables infinite recursion and sac loops while turning creatures into mana.
- Grave Pact — Turns your wide, recurring board into repeatable, one-sided removal.
- Meren of Clan Nel Toth — Doubles down on creature recursion to grind opponents into the dirt.
- Craterhoof Behemoth — Discounted by Rutstein and an instant kill once your board goes wide.
- Mikaeus, the Unhallowed — Builds undying sac loops with your creatures for infinite aristocrats value.
Upgrade Path
Add fast mana (Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, mana dorks) and tutors like Diabolic Intent and Demonic Tutor to assemble engines faster. Lean into a clear combo finish—Mikaeus + Phyrexian Altar + a sac payoff, or Persist creatures with free sac outlets—so you don't just durdle. Round out with graveyard recursion (Meren, Eternal Witness) and protection like Heroic Intervention to keep your board intact.

Win Conditions
- ▸Overrun a wide board with Craterhoof Behemoth or Overwhelming Stampede
- ▸Drain the table via aristocrats engines like Blood Artist and Zulaport Cutthroat
- ▸Assemble a sacrifice/recursion loop for infinite damage or mill
- ▸Grind opponents out with relentless creature value and combat
Archetypes
- Aristocrats — Cheap recurring creatures plus sacrifice outlets drain the table repeatedly.
- Reanimator — His recursion feeds cheats while the discount lets you hardcast fatties.
- Tokens/Go-Wide — Discounted creatures and recursion build a board that overruns opponents.
- Value Midrange — Constant card advantage from recasting Rutstein grinds out long games.
